2 people injured in Chicago mall disturbance

(AP) ? A manager at a Chicago mall where the boy band Mindless Behavior signed autographs for fans says a disturbance that left two people with minor injuries was "totally unrelated" to the event.

Ford City Mall senior general manager John Sarama says a group of older youths caused Saturday's disturbance, not the young girls and parents who attended the boy band appearance.

Police spokesman Veejay Zala says multiple arrests were made but none for serious charges. He says officers evacuated the mall and closed it for the rest of the day.

Sarama says the Mindless Behavior event ended about 45 minutes before the disturbance. Fans who bought the group's new CD during a pre-sale were given posters for band members to sign.

The group's publicist couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Obama administration urges justices to overturn anti-gay marriage law

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration outlined its argument on Friday why the U.S. Supreme Court should strike down a federal law that defines marriage as between a man and woman.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli filed a brief with the court saying that section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional, expanding on the administration's approach to the controversial 1996 law, which it has formally opposed since February 2011.

Section 3 defines marriage under federal law as being between a man and a woman.

The law denies federal benefits to same-sex married couples that are granted to married heterosexuals.

The administration's position is that the law violates the guarantee of equal protection under the law.

In the brief, Verrilli said there was a history of discrimination against gays and lesbians that required the Supreme Court to take a careful look at any law that specifically targets them as a group.

He therefore urged the court to take an approach to analyzing the law known as "heightened scrutiny," which, if adopted by the court, could make it more likely the court would find the law unconstitutional.

"The law denies to tens of thousands of same-sex couples who are legally married under state law an array of important federal benefits that are available to legally married opposite sex couples," he wrote.

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in the case on March 27, the day after it weighs the constitutionality of a California law, Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in that state.

The administration has until Thursday to decide whether to weigh in on Proposition 8.

Another Dingbat Sexual Selection Theory

A model on the catwalk during the Spring/Summer 2012 collection for French fashion house Dior in Shanghai April 14, 2012. Science, the world, etc., revolves around what males find attractive

On Valentine?s Day, the New York Times ran an article in its science section linking physical traits common in East Asians?thick hair, distinctively-shaped teeth, small breasts, and extra sweat glands?to a 35,000-year-old mutation in a gene called EDAR. Researchers reproduced the mutation, which is carried by East Asians but not Africans or Europeans, in mice. The animals had more lustrous fur, more sweat glands, and smaller chests.

The article, by Nicholas Wade, starts off with plausible explanations for why natural selection might have favored the deviation in EDAR when it emerged thousands of years ago in central China. One or two of the traits influenced by the gene may have been advantageous for survival; as those features persisted in the population, the other attributes came along for the ride. And he tracks down a reasonable hypothesis about which characteristic made EDAR so valuable: the sweat glands. For people hunting and gathering in China?s formerly warm and soupy climate, staying cool was crucial.

Fine. But then Wade derails the whole thing with a perfectly silly evolutionary biology just-so story. He quotes Joshua Akey, a geneticist at the University of Washington in Seattle, as saying it all comes down to pretty ladyparts.

According to Akey, ?thick hair and small breasts are visible sexual signals which, if preferred by men, could quickly become more common as the carriers had more children.? In fact, he claims, ?the sexually visible effects of EDAR are likely to have been stronger drivers of natural selection than sweat glands.?

Basically, the genetic mutation flourished because men wanted to do the no-no-cha-cha with women who carried it. Oops, I?d forgotten that science, the world, etc., revolves around what males find attractive. Never mind that this assumes an alarming passivity on the part of the females. Did they have no say in their mating partner? (That?s a rhetorical question: Studies throughout the animal kingdom show that it?s usually the females who decide who gets action and who doesn?t.) And even supposing that the women had no agency, were prehistoric East Asian men really so very picky? Did they typically refuse intercourse with large-breasted or fine-haired women? I am trying to imagine a caveman turning down a willing sexual partner on account of a triviality like insufficiently luxuriant tresses, and not just one caveman but the entire sperm-producing Pleistocene population. ?

To be fair, the paper itself, written by a team led by Yana G. Kamberov and Pardis C. Sabeti at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., largely avoids speculating about how the EDAR mutation perpetuated. ?The problem with all selection, but especially sexual selection, is that it?s impossible to test on humans,? co-author Daniel Lieberman told me. ?We were careful not to make assumptions about the selective benefits of the gene.? When I asked him whether he found Akey?s hypothesis plausible, he replied, ?Frankly, no.??

He?s not alone. The variability of erotic desire is just one reason many biologists believe that sexual selection played a relatively small role in the evolution of human appearance. Other factors proved much more crucial for survival and only incidentally influenced what we look like today. For instance, populations that migrated north had less exposure to ultraviolet light and thus risked vitamin D deficiency; light skin, which makes it easier to produce vitamin D, evolved independently several times. Efficient fat storage allowed humans to weather periods of famine.

Jerry Coyne, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Chicago who blogs at Why Evolution Is True, describes Akey?s hair-and-breast theory as ?extremely dubious.? He says that sexually selected traits tend to arise in one sex only, as the choosier adults?usually the females, not the males?mate with partners on the basis of a characteristic that is otherwise less than optimal. That feature would normally disappear from a population, except that the picky sex keeps selecting for it. (The less picky sex, on the other hand, generally just reproduces with whoever is around, which happen to be the fittest animals. Hence, male birds often boast showy, unwieldy tails that females prefer; female birds have shorter, practical tails that neither hamper flight nor lure suitors.)

Coyne also takes issue with the study in general. He wonders how the researchers concluded that the variant EDAR gene shrinks breasts at all, given that mice don?t have breasts??at least, they don?t have pronounced lumps on their chests the way people do. (Daniel Lieberman answered this criticism on the phone by noting that the animals? mammary tissue was carefully weighed, but even then, anatomical differences make it hard to extrapolate from rodents to humans.) The entire effort, Coyne says, shows ?evolutionists indulging in their favorite game?adaptionism?by imagining scenarios of evolution fixing various things, regardless of evidence.?

Yet in some circles (ones that get print space in the New York Times), the explanatory power of the primordial dude surveying his pack of womenz and picking the hottest one apparently remains unequalled. As our distant great grandmothers might say, ugh. ?

Oil levels off after 2 days of steep losses

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil was little changed Friday after a 5 percent fall over the last two days. The drop in crude showed signs of slowing the upward spiral of gas pump prices as well, at least temporarily.

Benchmark crude for April delivery rose 29 cents to finish at $93.13 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, used to price oil that many U.S. refineries use to make gasoline, rose 57 cents at end at $114.10 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

At the pump the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $3.78, about where it was on Thursday, but 14 cents higher than a week ago and almost half a dollar more than a month ago, according to AAA. Drivers in California, Florida, the Northeast and the Midwest are paying the most.

Encouraging news about the global economy helped oil prices stabilize. The European Commission said Friday that it expects the recession afflicting the economy of the 17 countries sharing the euro to bottom out during the first half of the year, with growth reaching an annual rate of 0.7 percent in the fourth quarter. The EC expects growth in the eurozone to accelerate to 1.4 percent next year.

And a survey of German business optimism rose sharply this month, raising hopes that the country will avoid a recession. A solid German economy could help weaker eurozone countries out of recession.

A stronger global economy is likely to mean more demand for oil and gas, which points to higher prices for fuel.

U.S. stock markets rebounded from a recent slump on concerns about the fate of the Fed's stimulus program and looming budget cuts in Washington. The major indexes were all higher in afternoon trading.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Natural gas rose 4.5 cents to finish at $3.29 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil was up less than 1 cent to end at $3.10 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline for April rose 3 cents to finish at $3.27 per gallon.

UFC 157 picks from Kevin Iole, Maggie Hendricks and Cagereaders like you

After months of build-up, we're almost to the historic bout between Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche, which headlines UFC 157 in Anaheim. Here is how we think the fights will go. A big thank you to all the Cagereaders who contributed their picks.

Kevin Iole ?Ronda Rousey SUB1 Liz Carmouche: Scottie Bowman, the greatest hockey coach ever, always would say he'd stick with the hot hand. In this case, the hot hand is Rousey. She's got a far better athletic pedigree and she's looked unbeatable against elite competition in Kaufmann and Tate. First-round arm bar win for Rousey

Maggie Hendricks ? Ronda Rousey SUB1 Liz Carmouche: The thing about Rousey's armbar is that it's going to be unstoppable until someone stops it. Brilliant, right? Because of the move's unpredictability, it's equally difficult to predict who will be the one who can stop it.

Cagereader ? My pick: Ronda Rousey by first round armbar. Yes, again. I don't think anyone's got her figured out yet, and her aggression is too much to deal with for anyone at this point. -- Dan Butera

Cagereader ? Rousey. She has more to offer than Carmouche. I think it will be Rousey's longest fight ever since Carmouche is a scrappy chick. She definitely has her work cut out for her. -- Charlotte Petroskey

***

Kevin Iole ? Dan Henderson TKO2 Lyoto Machida: Henderson is going to grind on Machida and wear him down until he gets enough space to land his big right hand.

Maggie Hendricks ? Dan Henderson W3 Lyoto Machida: As Kevin Iole points out in his column, Machida is not the elusive fighter he once was. Henderson will wear him down and take the bout.

Cagereader ? I'll take Machida over Henderson. Machida's height, reach, and long torso is going to make it very hard for Hendo to impose his will. Throw in Machida's speed advantage, faster punches, better cardio, and youth, and this one could end up being lopsided. Dan Henderson, as always, does have a puncher's chance, but that is about it in my opinion. -- Buddy Kreutzer

***

Kevin Iole ? Urijah Faber SUB3 Ivan Menjivar: Faber hasn't fought like a star in a while and the pressure is on him to do so. He's primed for a good performance and I think he delivers it.

Maggie Hendricks ? Urijah Faber SUB2 Ivan Menjivar: Fighting in California, Faber should be able to get back on the winning track and outgrapple Menjivar for a win.

Cagereader ? Though both Faber and his opponent are very dynamic and multidimensional, predict the intense energy will lead to an unpredictable TKO with Faber winning! -- Ernie Brewer

***

Kevin Iole ? Josh Neer W3 Court McGee: This is a flip-a-coin match so I'm going to go with the guy with more experience.

Maggie Hendricks ? Court McGee W3 Josh Neer: Yep, pretty much what Kevin said, so my coin flipped to McGee.

Cagereader ? Hard not to like McGee's drop to 170. His smothering style should win the day. McGee by Decision. - John Wilcox

***

Kevin Iole ? Josh Koscheck W3 Robbie Lawler: Lawler is simply not the same fighter he once was. I think Koscheck wins a pretty wide decision here.

Maggie Hendricks ? Josh Koscheck W3 Robbie Lawler: Though Koscheck is coming off of a loss, Lawler hasn't done much to show he can stop Koscheck's wrestling or striking.

Cagereader ? I think Koscheck to beat Lawler. Kos will be desperate to get back into the win column and I see him wearing down Robbie with his outstanding wrestling ability and finishing him late on as Lawler tires. Koscheck by RNC round 3. - Craig Donaldson

United removing Boeing 787 from flight plans

(Reuters) - United Continental Holdings said on Thursday it was taking Boeing Co's grounded 787 Dreamliner out of its flying plans through June 5, except for a Denver-to-Tokyo route scheduled for a tentative launch in May.

United's decision came as a Japanese investigation of a fuel leak on a Dreamliner operated by Japan Airlines Co Ltd (JAL) indicated the cause to be a coating around the mechanism that controls fuel movement between tanks.

Japanese officials launched the investigation after two fuel leaks on the JAL 787, just days before authorities around the world grounded the new lightweight passenger jets over battery failures that sparked fires on two planes in January.

Japanese authorities still have not found the cause of the battery issue.

Airlines operating 787s are setting schedules for coming months while still uncertain about when the plane will be able to resume service following the fleet's grounding five weeks ago.

Boeing is due to meet with the head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Friday to present measures designed to prevent further battery failures, a source told Reuters, even though the root cause of the electrical problem has not been determined.

United spokeswoman Christen David said in a statement on Thursday that the carrier's Denver to Tokyo Narita International route, originally set to start March 31, had been postponed to May 12.

The launch would ultimately depend on a successful resolution of the safety incidents that have grounded the 787. Other service with the 787 won't resume until after June 5, David said.

"We are taking the 787 out of our schedule through June 5, except for Denver-Narita, which will tentatively launch on May 12," United's statement said.

MAINTAINING DIALOGUE

Boeing said it was maintaining communication with United as the plane maker develops a plan to resume 787 service. "We deeply regret the impact the recent events have had on the schedule for United and their customers," Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said in an emailed comment.

United's statement doesn't mean that the 787 won't be ready to fly again before June 5, said Carter Leake, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets.

Rather, it means United will not put the jet into service before then. If the plane is available sooner but United cannot use it on its scheduled routes, Boeing likely would have to pay United compensation that Leake estimates at about $800,000 a month, based on lease rates.

"This does not tell you that Boeing's plane is grounded until June," he said. "It tells you that Boeing's costs to United could be as if it's grounded until June."

A "superbox" to contain the battery or some other fix "might come sooner, but United is not paying" to have the jet until after June 5, he added.

In a similar move, Poland's national airline LOT said last week that it would not use the 787 before October and that it is seeking compensation from Boeing .

"Airlines don't make money while their planes are on the ground," said Morningstar airline analyst Basili Alukos.

United is the only U.S. carrier currently operating the 787 and has six of the planes, worth $207 million apiece at list prices. JAL and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have nearly half of the 50 jets delivered to airlines so far.

Japan's Transport Ministry said it believed the manufacturing process led to deficiencies in the way electrical-insulating coating was applied to the mechanism that opened and closed the fuel-tank valve.

Investigators also found foreign matter on a switch that operated the same mechanism, causing it to send a signal that the valve was closed when it was still half open -- leading to the leak.

The ministry said four Dreamliners in Japan, two from JAL and two from ANA, might be affected by the manufacturing process.

Love's legacies showcased at Museum of Broken Relationships

Have you ever had a broken heart?

Do you own an object that won't let you forget?

Prague has its Museum of Communism. Berlin has its DDR Museum. Zagreb has its Museum of Broken Relationships filled with cherished possessions donated by people with intimate stories to tell about what led to their break-ups and what the items symbolized.

The museum is the work of Croatian designer and artist Drazen Grubisic and film producer Olinka Vistica, business partners whose four-year romantic relationship ended about seven years ago.

"We asked ourselves, 'What are we going to do with all the stuff?'" Drazen said.

They came up with the idea of starting a traveling art exhibit dedicated to the legacies of love. It later found a permanent home inside an 18th-century baroque place in Zagreb's historic upper town.

"We observe just about every important occasion with some sort of a ritual," Drazen said. "But when you break-up, that's it."

Now, on the road once again, with traveling shows planned this year in Paris, Taiwan, Amsterdam and Brazil, the pair is anxious to find out how the concept will play out in the United States when a special exhibit opens on Valentine's Day in Boulder, Colo., named No. 1 on a Gallup poll survey of America's happiest cities.

"Only two outcomes are possible,"the Zagreb curators predicted when they teamed up with the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art to sponsor the show."We will either be left empty-handed or we will prove that break-ups do not stand in the way of happiness."

It turned out to be the latter, says Boulder's associate curator Petra Sertic who put out a call locally for donations to supplement what will be sent from Zagreb.

The first to come in (all are accompanied by a story that will be mounted, without names attached, next to the object) was a very Boulder-like box of fancy, new-age version of microwave popcorn.

"He was dating someone who was a buyer for a health food store, and she got a lot of samples," Sertic said." He got to sample a lot of them, and to have it around anymore, reminded him of her and their dog and the things they would share.''

The idea of turning museum-goers into artists fits in with the Boulder museum's emphasis on participatory exhibits, Sertic said.

A recent show on food featured a French artist who installed an herb garden where people could sit and enjoy eating salad.

On display, starting Valentine's Day, will be 50 or so objects, including the popcorn, a pair of gold-plated penguin cuff links (they watched "March of the Penguins'' together and decided they were each other's penguins), and a golden globe sent by FedEx with the "Ex" highlighted.

A pile of love letters came in from a Boulder man with this note attached:

"Upon breaking up she gave me back all the letters I wrote her telling me 'that she knew what happened to old letters,' and she didn't want them anymore."

"Now I'm left with a pile of old letters not sure what happens to them. (Then) I found out about this exhibit. Maybe this is what happens?"

The best of what's collected in Colorado will be sent to Croatia to add to a permanent collection of more than 1,000 items?some touching, others funny or sad.

One of the first items visitors see at the Zagreb museum is a furry white windup rabbit ? a relic of Grubisic and Vistica's own relationship.

"We traveled a lot and one of us would take it wherever we went," Drazen said. It was meant to travel the world, but made it only as far as Iran, where Drazen photographed it in the desert.

In one room labeled "Rage and Fury'' hangs an ax donated by a woman in Berlin who used it to chop one piece of her girlfriend's furniture every day for 14 days after the woman left, then went on a two-week holiday.

About 70 percent of the items have been donated by women, 30 percent by men.

Cultural differences show up in the way people tell their stories, Drazen said.

"In Anglo-Saxon countries, it's like a short script for a movie. In France, it's more like they're talking to a shrink.''

A painting honoring Cal, coach of the 1959 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship-winning Golden Bears will be unveiled at Thursday's game against UCLA.

CAL TAKES DOWN TWO TOP-10 TEAMS IN 8-DAY SPAN
Cal has faced a pair of top-10 nationally-ranked teams in an eight-day span in Pac-12 leads No. 10 Oregon and No. 7 Arizona. The Bears earned victories against both foes, beating the Ducks, 58-54, at Haas Pavilion on Feb. 1 and earning the win against the Wildcats in Tucson on Feb. 10.

The victory over No. 7 Arizona was the highest-ranked opponent the Bears have defeated since March 8, 2007 when Cal beat No. 3 UCLA, 76-69, in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament in Los Angeles. It was Cal's first road victory over a top-10 team since Jan. 31, 2008, when the Bears defeated No. 9 Washington State, 69-64, in Pullman, Wash.

Cal is 2-2 in its four games against nationally-ranked opponents this season, also facing No. 13 Creighton (L, 79-64) and No. 18 UNLV (L, 76-75).

STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT
Cal has produced 63 steals in its last six games after combining for 77 steals in its first 17 contests. Cobbs leads the way with 14 steals during that span.

CRABBE CONTINUES TO CLIMB ALL-TIME SCORING LIST
Junior Allen Crabbe became the 42nd player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone for his Golden Bear career. He hit the four-digit total in the season's third game at Denver on Nov. 16. Crabbe achieved the milestone in his 68th career game, 19 games less than it took Cal's all-time leading scorer Jerome Randle (1,835 from 2006-10) to reach the 1,000-point mark. Crabbe enters Thursday's UCLA game 13th in career scoring with 1,385 points in 88 games.

PAC-12 SCORING LEADER ALL SEASON
With an average of 19.8 points per game, Crabbe has led the Pac-12 Conference in scoring all season and ranks 17th in the nation overall. His career-high 33 points against Pepperdine equals the second-most points by an individual in the conference this season.

Crabbe is also among the conference leaders in free-throw percentage (7th, .832), three-point field goals made per game (7th, 1.9) and field goal percentage (13th, .483).

PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Allen Crabbe was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday (Feb. 11), following his 31-point, seven-rebound, five-assist game to lead Cal to victory over No. 7 Arizona last Sunday. The junior's total was the most by a Wildcat opponent this season.

CRABBE'S 20-POINT GAMES
Crabbe has 25 career 20-point games, including 12 this season. He has posted four-straight 20-point games twice in his career, both this season and as a freshman. Cal is 8-4 when Crabbe has scored 20 or more points this season. Crabbe's last five 20-point games have come on the road. Here is a look at Crabbe's 20-point games this season.

SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST Crabbe has recorded 16 or more points in the second half in seven games this season. He also registered a 20-point first half on 8-of-12 shooting and 4-of-4 from 3-point range against CSUB. Here is a look at Crabbe's top second-half performances.

CRABBE AND COBBS
Junior guards Justin Cobbs and Allen Crabbe have combined to score 790 of Cal's 1,569 points through 23 games. Crabbe leads the Pac-12 conference with 455 points on the year, while Cobbs is 12th in the league (11th in points per game) with a total of 335 points. Crabbe and Cobbs are the highest scoring pair in the Pac-12, combining for 34.4 points per game. The duo has each recorded 20-point games in the same contest on five occasions. Cal owns a 4-1 record in those games.

JUNIOR GUARDS HAVE INCREASED MINUTES/PRODUCTION
Allen Crabbe has already recorded 93 more points this season than he did through the first 23 games of his sophomore campaign. The guard, who is averaging 2.3 more minutes per game this season (36.0) than he did last year (33.7), had 362 points through the first 23 games of 2011-12.

Justin Cobbs has surpassed his scoring total from the season's first 23 games of last season by 39 points in 2012-13. Last year, he recorded 296 points through the Bears' first 23 games. He is averaging 3.9 more minutes a game this season (35.2) as compared to last year (31.3).

WALLACE PROVIDES INSTANT IMPACT
Freshman guard Tyrone Wallace has provided an instant impact for the Bears. He earned a starting role in Cal's 10th game (vs. UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 18) of the season and has played at least 30 minutes in six of the Bears' last seven games. The first-year guard posted his first career double-double in his first career start against UCSB with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Wallace is Cal's fifth-leading scorer (7.2 ppg.) and lone freshman to play in all 23 games. He played a career-long 38 minutes at USC and vs. Oregon. The freshman scored a career-best 16 points vs. Washington State and at Arizona State. Wallace has reached double figures in rebounding twice with 10 each against No. 13 Creighton and UCSB, while his career-best eight assists came at Utah.

Since Wallace was inserted into the starting lineup 14 games ago, he has averaged 7.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

KRAVISH STRONG IN THE POST
After a 2011-12 season where David Kravish earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 Freshman team, the 6-9 forward added 20 pounds to his frame in the off-season. He is the team's leading rebounder (ranks 14th in the Pac-12 with 6.7 rpg.) and shot blocker (7th in the Pac-12 at 1.4 bpg.). The forward has posted seven or more rebounds in a game in 11 contests. Kravish recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds at Denver. He has posted four double-digit rebounding games this season, including 12 at UCLA and 10 vs. Pacific. The sophomore ranks seventh all-time at Cal with 74 career blocks.

SOLOMON RETURNING TO FORM
Junior Richard Solomon, who missed the final 15 games of last season, has played in all 23 games this season. He has started 21 contests. Solomon is Cal's third-leading scorer (8.0 ppg.) and second-leading rebounder (6.4 rpg.). The junior has scored in double figures in eight games, including a career-high 18 points vs. Prairie View A&M. He recorded a career-best 12 rebounds vs. No. 10 Oregon. Solomon has posted a pair of double-doubles this season (11 points and 10 rebounds at UCLA, 13 points and 12 rebounds vs. Oregon). He also registered a career-high six blocks vs. WSU to go along with seven points and eight rebounds, becoming the first player in school history with at least six points, six rebounds and six blocks in a game. Solomon has totaled 28 rebounds in his last four games.

THURMAN EFFICIENT WITH MINUTES Senior forward Robert Thurman has made the most of his minutes on the floor in 2012-13. The forward, who has started two games this season, is averaging 17.5 minutes per contest. The senior made his first career start in his 55th career game vs. Washington on Jan. 9. He is averaging 5.0 ppg. and 3.7 rpg. The forward posted a season-high 14 points in 23 minutes vs. UCSB.

SMITH BACK AT THE POINT FOR BEARS
Senior guard Brandon Smith, who missed six games after suffering a head injury vs. PVAM on Dec. 22, made his return to the court six games ago at Utah. After being sidelined for more than a month, he was cleared to play on Jan. 23. The senior played his longest minutes since Dec. 9 with 23 minutes on the floor vs. Oregon State. He scored six points and dished out a pair of assists vs. the Beavers.

SUPER POWERS
After appearing in just five of the first nine games, junior guard Jeff Powers has played in 11 of the last 13 games. He has scored all 25 of his points on the season and logged 112 of his 125 minutes of the year in his last 11 games. Powers started the Bears' game against Washington State, playing a season-long 19 minutes against the Cougars. The junior was sidelined three games ago after suffering a bone bruise on his knee against Oregon State.

BAK BAK
Senior center Bak Bak has also increased his presence in the Bears' line-up. Over his last 10 games, Bak has totaled 63 minutes on the floor. He had played 26 minutes overall in his first five appearances of the season prior to the USC contest on Jan. 5. Bak scored a season-high six points in six minutes in the win at No. 7 Arizona last time out.

A LOOK AT UCLA
UCLA comes to Berkeley following a sweep of the Washington schools this past week. The Bruins are tied atop the Pac-12 standings with Arizona and Oregon with an 8-3 league mark. UCLA is 18-6 overall, receiving votes in both nationall polls.

UCLA leads the Pac-12 offensively, averaging 76.0 points per game. However, the Bruins are second to last in defense, surrendering 68.4 points per contest.

Freshman forward Shabazz Muhammad leads the Bruins in scoring and ranks second in the Pac-12 behind Allen Crabbe, averaging 18.5 points per game. Freshman guard Jordan Adams (14.7 ppg.) and redshirt junior forward Travis Wear (12.2 ppg.) are also averaging double figures in the scoring column for UCLA.

Ben Howland owns a 226-103 record in his 10th season as head coach at UCLA.

Cal has won the last two meetings with UCLA in Berkeley, defeating the Bruins 76-72 in overtime on Feb. 20, 2011 and 85-69 on Dec. 31, 2011. UCLA's last win at Haas Pavilion came on Jan. 6, 2010 (76-75).

CALIFORNIA-UCLA SERIES HISTORY
California and UCLA have met on the hardwood 233 times previously. The Bruins own a 133-100 advantage in the all-time series with the Golden Bears. Cal has won three of the last four games in the series. The Bruins snapped Cal's three-game winning streak in the series with a 79-65 victory in Los Angeles on Jan. 3.

Stem cell discovery gives insight into motor neuron disease

Feb. 11, 2013 ? A discovery using stem cells from a patient with motor neuron disease could help research into treatments for the condition. The study used a patient's skin cells to create motor neurons -- nerve cells that control muscle activity -- and the cells that support them called astrocytes.

Researchers studied these two types of cells in the laboratory. They found that a protein expressed by abnormalities in a gene linked to motor neuron disease, which is called TDP-43, caused the astrocytes to die.

The study, led by the University of Edinburgh and funded by the Motor Neurone Disease Association, provides fresh insight into the mechanisms involved in the disease.

Although TDP-43 mutations are a rare cause of motor neuron disease (MND), scientists are especially interested in the gene because in the vast majority of MND patients, TDP-43 protein (made by the TDP-43 gene) forms pathological clumps inside motor neurons.

Motor neurons die in MND leading to paralysis and early death.

This study shows for the first time that abnormal TDP-43 protein causes death of astrocytes. The researchers, however, found that the damaged astrocytes were not directly toxic to motor neurons.

Better understanding the role of astrocytes could help to inform research into treatments for MND.

Professor Siddharthan Chandran, of the University of Edinburgh, said: "Motor neuron disease is a devastating and ultimately fatal condition, for which there is no cure or effective treatment. It is not just a question of looking solely at motor neurons, but also the cells that surround them, to understand why motor neurons die. Our aim is to find ways to slow down progression of this devastating disease and ultimately develop a cure."

These findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences., are significant as they show that different mechanisms are at work in different types of MND.

The research, led by the University of Edinburgh's Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Research, was carried out in collaboration with King's College, London, Columbia University in New York, the University of California and the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco.

Dr Brian Dickie, the MND Association's Director of Research Development, said: "From a therapeutic perspective this finding is important because it means that specific treatments targeted at astrocytes may only be relevant and effective, in specific subsets of patients who will have to be carefully selected for drug trials."

Tim Cook: Apple Stores Are 'Like Prozac' - Business Insider

Apple's CEO just compared his company's stores to an antidepressant.

Before he took the stage at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference today, Tim Cook was grinning.

Come to think of it, he usually seems to be in a good mood when we've seen him speak at Apple launches and other public events.

But in his keynote interview at the Goldman conference, he confessed that sometimes he gets a little down.

When that happens, he said, he goes to visit an Apple Store to cheer himself up.

"It's like Prozac!" he said.

Vascular brain injury greater risk factor than amyloid plaques in cognitive aging

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Vascular brain injury from conditions such as high blood pressure and stroke are greater risk factors for cognitive impairment among non-demented older people than is the deposition of the amyloid plaques in the brain that long have been implicated in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, a study by researchers at the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at UC Davis has found.

Published online February 11 in JAMA Neurology (formerly Archives of Neurology), the study found that vascular brain injury had by far the greatest influence across a range of cognitive domains, including higher-level thinking and the forgetfulness of mild cognitive decline.

The researchers also sought to determine whether there was a correlation between vascular brain injury and the deposition of beta amyloid (??) plaques, thought to be an early and important marker of Alzheimer's disease, said Bruce Reed, associate director of the UC Davis Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Martinez, Calif. They also sought to decipher what effect each has on memory and executive functioning.

"We looked at two questions," said Reed, professor in the Department of Neurology at UC Davis. "The first question was whether those two pathologies correlate to each other, and the simple answer is 'no.' Earlier research, conducted in animals, has suggested that having a stroke causes more beta amyloid deposition in the brain. If that were the case, people who had more vascular brain injury should have higher levels of beta amyloid. We found no evidence to support that."

"The second," Reed continued, "was whether higher levels of cerebrovascular disease or amyloid plaques have a greater impact on cognitive function in older, non-demented adults. Half of the study participants had abnormal levels of beta amyloid and half vascular brain injury, or infarcts. It was really very clear that the amyloid had very little effect, but the vascular brain injury had distinctly negative effects."

"The more vascular brain injury the participants had, the worse their memory and the worse their executive function -- their ability to organize and problem solve," Reed said.

The research was conducted in 61 male and female study participants who ranged in age from 65 to 90 years old, with an average age of 78. Thirty of the participants were clinically "normal," 24 were cognitively impaired and seven were diagnosed with dementia, based on cognitive testing. The participants had been recruited from Northern California between 2007 to 2012.

The study participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ? to measure vascular brain injury ? and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to measure beta amyloid deposition: markers of the two most common pathologies that affect the aging brain. Vascular brain injury appears as brain infarcts and "white matter hyperintensities" in MRI scans, areas of the brain that appear bright white.

The study found that both memory and executive function correlated negatively with brain infarcts, especially infarcts in cortical and sub-cortical gray matter. Although infarcts were common in this group, the infarcts varied greatly in size and location, and many had been clinically silent. The level of amyloid in the brain did not correlate with either changes in memory or executive function, and there was no evidence that amyloid interacted with infarcts to impair thinking.

Reed said the study is important because there's an enormous amount of interest in detecting Alzheimer's disease at its earliest point, before an individual exhibits clinical symptoms. It's possible to conduct a brain scan and detect beta amyloid in the brain, and that is a very new development, he said.

"The use of this diagnostic tool will become reasonably widely available within the next couple of years, so doctors will be able to detect whether an older person has abnormal levels of beta amyloid in the brain. So it's very important to understand the meaning of a finding of beta amyloid deposition," Reed said.

"What this study says is that doctors should think about this in a little more complicated way. They should not forget about cerebrovascular disease, which is also very common in this age group and could also cause cognitive problems. Even if a person has amyloid plaques, those plaques may not be the cause of their mild cognitive symptoms."

Other study authors include Natalie Marchant of UC Berkeley and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging; Roxana Dhada and William Jagust of UC Berkeley; Charles DeCarli and Dan Mungas of UC Davis; Stephen Kriger and Micheal Weiner of UC San Francisco and Nerses Sanossian, Wendy Mack and Helena Chui of the University of Southern California.

The research was supported by grants number AG012435, AG00266 and AG10129 from the National Institutes of Health.

Audi Stromlinie 75 Concept revives 1938 Auto Union Type C record car

Design student Luke Rittwage has brought back to life the 1938 Auto Union Type C.

On January 28, 1938, Bernd Rosemeyer passed away while trying to establish a new speed record. His 520 hp (388 kW) car was pushed from the roadway by a gust of wind while travelling at a speed of 429 km/h (266.57 mph). It's been 75 years since the accident and now a modern interpretation based on the original design plans of the Type C has been virtually imagined with an electric R8 serving as foundation.

The vehicle is 4795 mm long, 2000 mm wide and 1090 mm tall, with a 2650 mm wheelbase. It has 18-inch wheels with 235/40 front and 285/35 rear tires. It comes with muscular front and rear fenders, retractable spoiler, a central driving position and "75" logos on the front wheel arches to indicate the time difference between the two cars.

WVU, OSU create partnership for shale energy research, outreach and education

Officials at The Ohio State University and West Virginia University have signed a memorandum of understanding creating a shale energy partnership between the two schools, agreeing to work collaboratively to develop a joint program of research in the Appalachian Region?s developing shale energy industry.

As each state?s land-grant institution, Ohio State and WVU share a mission to serve the people of their respective states through research, on-campus education, and outreach. Consistent with this mission, Ohio State and WVU will collaborate on scholarly work and instruction focused on shale energy. Together, these institutions will address the complex issues related to shale development, including the economic implications of natural gas and other hydrocarbons, as well as the possible impacts of such development efforts on the environment, local communities and public health.

?This singular partnership demonstrates the wisdom of universities collaborating with one another,? said Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee. ?West Virginia University and Ohio State have complementary research strengths in this area. Working together, our faculty will take a unique leadership role that will advance our shared, scientific understanding of the complex environmental and economic issues in shale energy.?

The MOU acknowledges that research and education related to shale energy development must be of high value to students, faculty, and the public. The two schools will exchange information and jointly explore funding of shale energy and related environmental studies before, during, and after the development of the Utica and Marcellus shale plays, including the possibility of developing shale energy field laboratories.

?I am very excited about this partnership between two land-grant, flagship, research universities on an issue that is of great importance,? WVU President Jim Clements said. ?By working together we will enhance our capacity to do cutting-edge research, high-quality teaching and effective outreach on shale energy. This partnership will also enhance our ability to serve the energy needs of our states, nation and world.

?On a personal note, it is always a privilege to work with President Gee and his outstanding team at Ohio State,? Clements said.

The idea for the collaboration began with conversations between Ohio State and WVU officials attending the ?2012 Public and Land-Grant University Conference on Energy Challenges,? held at Ohio State in April 2012 and co-sponsored by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and Colorado State University.

The conversations and subsequent MOU centered on a potential collaboration between the research universities, recognizing that combining efforts on shale energy research, education, and outreach would be of great benefit to the respective universities and states, the Appalachian Region, our nation and the world.

?Energy from shale is a huge resource of vast regional importance that will be tapped and how we do it will have lasting effects,? Peter McPherson, APLU president, said. ?I am pleased that these two premier land grant universities are available to take a leadership role in increasing our knowledge of the correct way to harvest this resource.?

Australians gather in Rome for Order of Malta celebrations

Australian Order of Malta delegates are among 4,000 international delegates currently in Rome to celebrate the 900 year anniversary of the issue of the papal bull?Pie postulatio voluntatis?by Pope Paschal II on Friday, reports the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.

The papal decree, addressed to founder Blessed Gerard, gave ecclesiastical approval for the Hospital of St John, which is today the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta.

To mark the occasion, robed Members of the Order from across the globe, including a group of 15 representatives from the Australian Association, are currently gathered in Rome for an International Working Conference. The conference started on Wednesday and the celebrations culminated in a Pontifical High Mass at St Peter?s Basilica on Saturday.

The Australian delegates include Australian Ambassadors of the Order of Malta James Dominguez, David Scarf, Michael Mann and Michael?s wife Monique and daughter Alexandra; the Australian President Tony Macken AM, son Antony and daughter Venetia, both members of the Order; Victorian Order Members Colonel Anthony Heath and Damian Benson; from London Josh Puls; from Queensland Dr Ian Marshall AM and Judith Marshall (Dr Marshall is the National Hospitaller of the Order of Malta in Australia); and from Sydney Frank Testa and his mother Mary Testa.

While the papal decree was issued 900 years ago, the Hospital of St John began operating in Jerusalem in about 1048, 65 years earlier. It was founded by Blessed Gerard to provide care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims to the Holy Land.

AP Exclusive: Mysterious China blogger comes out

BEIJING (AP) ? For weeks, a mysterious microblog has been lifting a veil from around China's new leader, Xi Jinping, with candid snapshots from his travels that defy the typically stiff and staged images of the leadership presented in state media.

Ordinary Chinese, foreign reporters and even China's own state media have speculated over who or what might be behind the blog ? ostensibly registered to a female tech school graduate. Is Xi's own team surreptitiously trying to humanize the leader in the guise of citizen journalism? Is this a crusader's attempt to bring China's leaders down a notch and send them a message?

It turns out it's the brainchild of a male college dropout and migrant worker, Zhang Hongming, who told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that he is both a genuine fan of China's new leader and intent on making him more accessible to the country's people.

"It is just me. It's completely an individual act," said Zhang, who started the "Fan Club of Learning From Xi" on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo on Nov. 21 with a simple thought: Like other foreign leaders in these times, Chinese leaders should have an online following.

Zhang said he initially wanted to keep a low profile, but now wants to come forward to end the rampant speculation about his identity and intentions.

The account shares photos gathered from citizen volunteers and local reports throughout the country of Xi on his visits out in the field ? and the candid images aren't always flattering. There are shots of him visiting a vegetable market, serving food to the elderly, looking sideways. One shows him napping in a van.

The microblog even tracked Xi's recent trip to Gansu province step by step, beating state media in reporting Xi's activities. National broadcaster CCTV complained on its own microblog: "What happened? The Study Xi Fan Club is quicker and closer to him than us."

The unexpected popularity of the microblog speaks to the Chinese public's demand to humanize their typically aloof leaders.

"Our leaders used to appear to be out of reach for the masses. They always appeared to be mysterious. Now the public can feel closer to their leader with timely and transparent information," Zhang said. "Xi is a national leader, but take his official title away, he's an ordinary person."

A native of the southwestern province of Sichuan, Zhang said he dropped out of a technical college in 2008 when he realized he was not learning anything. He moved to the more prosperous provinces in China's east and south, where he has worked many odd jobs, including delivery. He now helps produce wall decorations in the city of Wuxi in Jiangsu province.

Tech-savvy, Zhang said he often visits foreign sites and came to realize that many foreign leaders have online followings. "We didn't have one for Xi, and I felt like I could do that. After all, I am filled with expectations that our new leader will be affable," said Zhang, who was contacted through the password-protected private message function on his Weibo account that only he could reasonably have access to. During a later video chat, he showed his government-issued ID card to verify his identity.

Zhang said he initially registered the account as the Fan Club of General Secretary Xi, but found he had difficulty posting to it. Then he changed it to "the Fan Club of Learning from Xi," in a wordplay on Xi's name, which also means "studying" in Chinese.

Some of the initial followers were fans of Xi's wife, Peng Liyuan, a popular folk singer, Zhang said. As he focused more on casual images of Xi, he began to receive more input from fans.

Zhang said he initially did not want the focus to be on himself, so he registered his account under the fictitious profile of a Shaanxi province woman identified as a graduate of Xidian University.

The microblog has gained more than 700,000 followers, and did such a good job that the Chinese public began to wonder if it was an inside job by Xi's team. Foreign media chimed in with reports wondering how the account was able to post so many photos of Xi in a country where information on the leadership's movements is tightly controlled.

Zhang said the proliferation of smartphones has allowed fans to snatch impromptu photos of Xi. Although they live and work in a heavily guarded government compound in central Beijing, top Chinese leaders make a regular show of traveling to the provinces and meeting ordinary people.

The trips are normally tightly scripted, but occasional spontaneous incidents can occur. Communist Party No. 2, Li Keqiang, earned some unwanted attention recently when a bare-bottomed toddler crawled out of a cupboard during a recent televised visit with a farming family.

Zhang recently posted an explanation saying the microblog had no relationship with Xi, but that just triggered more suspicion, he said, adding in an interview that he now wanted to go further and reveal his identity to quell growing public speculation.

"There's so much guessing, and now by revealing myself I hope it will dispel everyone's suspicions," Zhang said.

Zhang said he relies on his instincts in deciding what to post to the account, and that he typically does not post photos from a location until Xi has moved on to his next stop.

Zhang said he has no idea if Xi approves of the fan club.

"But so far, no government worker or police has come after me," Zhang said. "That tells us they are getting more open, a sign the leadership is more open."

While the authorities have yet to issue an opinion on Zhang's microblog, response from other media watchers has been generally positive.

The interest in Zhang's microblog represents a desire to know more about the daily lives of high-level Chinese leaders, media commentator Liu Xuesong wrote in the Qianjiang Evening News, based in the southern city of Zhuhai.

"In a way it also represents a dissatisfaction in the degree of transparency surrounding the news about top leaders and a dissatisfaction with the tempo and forms of expression of the traditional official media," Liu wrote.

Meet Omar, the face of Egypt's 'unfinished revolution' - World News

Two years after nationwide protests forced President Hosni Mubarak from office, NBC News catches up with Omar Sedky who explains why his country's revolution hasn't met the expectations of many Egyptians.

By Yuka Tachibana, Producer, NBC News

CAIRO, Egypt -- Two years ago, chants of "Irhal! Irhal! (Leave!, Leave!)" resonated through Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicenter of Egypt's fledgling revolution.

Longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak listened. And on Feb. 11, 2011, thousands of joyful Egyptians poured onto the streets to cheer his resignation in anticipation of an exciting future. ?

Newly liberated Egypt must work hard to ?make magic happen,? protester Omar Sedky told NBC News just hours after Mubarak's downfall.?

The usually mild-mannered businessman?is still shouting today.

?The revolution is still going,? Sedky said when NBC News caught up with him in front of the presidential palace ahead of Monday?s two-year anniversary of Mubarak?s downfall.

NBC's Ron Allen reconnects with protester Omar Sedky and his family, who, despite their euphoria, remain focused on the task at hand: rebuilding their nation.

Since the heady days in the immediate aftermath of Mubarak's fall, political division has dimmed much of the optimism, but there is still the sense of a work in progress.

?I?m not disappointed,? said the 33-year-old digital media worker. ?There are ups and downs?but each time I get disappointed I stick to what I believe in.?

So what has changed?

?At least I can write blogs, I can Tweet without the fear of having the state police running after me,? ?Sedky said.

But with greater political freedom has come a degree of instability. Elections last year ended in a narrow victory for Islamist Mohammed Morsi over a former general, and tensions remain between Islamists and secular rivals.

There are concerns that hardline Islamists are taking over Morsi's government, and many Egyptians don't want to live under the strict rule that Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood party might impose.

Despite the end of the military state, Egypt?s police were last month accused of a return to Mubarak-era abuses after a video showed riot police stripping and beating a middle-aged man.

And a series of missteps by Morsi -- including a bid to grab sweeping powers even before the dust had settled on the country?s constitution --?have brought protesters back onto the streets.

Some of them -- including Sedky -- were among those originally demonstrating in the run-up Mubarak?s downfall.

"Freedom is about what you want and being heard and being assessed, and this is not shown from this government,? he said. ?So, it?s like a time bomb? it?s going to explode.?

The number of protesters is smaller than two years ago, but it is the level of violence which has many people here worried -- more than 60 people died in January alone in clashes across the country.

Related pictures:?Tempers flare in Egypt

The turmoil has kept foreign investors at bay, leaving the economy in a tailspin, while ordinary Egyptians fear for their safety on the streets.

Sedky said the country?s instability would end ?when we have a proper constitution, when we have a parliament that reflects the actual Egyptians, not just the wing that [Islamists] represent.?

Crowds in Tahrir Square erupted in jubilant cheers on Friday after Vice President Suleiman, appearing briefly on Egypt state TV, announced that President Mubarak has stepped down from presidency. NBC's Brian Williams, Richard Engel and Ron Allen report.

?We're going to celebrate when I find this government empowers women, when I see that police are not attacking civilians due to political pressure. ?This is when I celebrate but until then, I will be marching on the streets. I will be protesting until this happens."

It?s a distinctly less optimistic tone than the one he struck right after Mubarak fled from power.

Back then, NBC News shared tea and cakes with him at his home in Cairo with his family including father Hussein, mother Moushira and younger brother, Tarek.

All were savoring the new political dawn that millions of Egyptians had long awaited.

But even then, Sedky had acknowledged the enormity of Egypt?s task ahead:? ?We don't have a magic wand -- we have to work hard to make magic happen to real life,? he said then.

These days Sedky is a member of the Positive Movement, a secular and liberal non-governmental organization founded soon after the revolution, which encourages Egyptians to become more engaged in their country?s political transition. But while the last two years of turmoil and disappointment have dampened his euphoria,?he holds on to hope.?

?I have faith that we?re going to build this country properly again," he said.

Within minutes of speaking with Sedky, a previously peaceful protest turned ugly. ?Some protesters threw Molotov cocktails at the presidential?palace,?which was met with teargas and water canons?from the police.?The?grounds of the palace were set alight. ?At least one protester was shot and killed. ?

Another long night began for?what many like?Sedky?call their "unfinished revolution."

Five crew killed in Canaries cruise ship safety drill

MADRID (Reuters) - Five crew members died in an emergency drill on a cruise ship in the Canary Islands on Sunday, police and the cruise ship operator said.

Cables snapped on a lifeboat and it plunged 20 meters (65 feet) to the ocean and fell upside down, killing the five and injuring three others aboard, during the mock rescue exercise on the Thomson Majesty, operated by British travel group TUI Travel plc. The boat was docked in the port of the capital of the island of La Palma, Santa Cruz.

Safety tests on lifeboats are a significant source of accidents, according to a report by Britain's Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

There were 1,498 passengers on board the 20-year-old ship at the time, a Thomson Cruises spokesman said. None of them was involved in the accident. The ship is registered in Malta and owned by Cyprus-based cruise line Louis Cruises.

"We are working closely with the ship owners and managers, Louis Cruises, to determine exactly what has happened and provide assistance to those affected by the incident," Thomson Cruises, owned by TUI Travel plc, said in a statement.

Three of the dead were Indonesians. The other dead were a Filipino and a Ghanaian. Three more crew members were injured. One person has been discharged from hospital and the other two people were expected to be released from hospital imminently, the company statement said.

In Britain, the general secretary of the RMT shipping union, called for better safety standards.

Union leader Bob Crow said in a statement: "The thoughts of all seafarers will be with the friends and families of those who have lost their lives in this tragic incident.

"Once again the spotlight is on the issue of safety in the UK shipping and cruise industry and RMT awaits the outcome of the investigation and recommendations that can prevent any repetition of today's shocking events."

The Thomson Majesty, with five restaurants and two swimming pools, cruises to the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, according to Thomson's website.

Visual Graphic Design Conference February 2013 | Bemmygail

February 9, 2013 at 11 AM, was the Visual Graphic Design Conference in SM Cinema 2 Cebu. My much awaited conference this year has finally happened, and today I will be sharing my experience to everyone!

When I came to SM, it hasn?t started yet, and honestly, when there is a new conference like this next time I will surely be the first on the line because it was soooo tiring to stand there and wait for the super long line, unless you have some co-workers or friends with you, it wouldn?t be that bad. But seriously, it was a bit frustrating, but anyway, it started officially at 11:30 AM and I am still glad about it.

SONY DSC

As always, a conference will start by introducing what this is all about. The sponsors, should be mentioned, what?s gonna happen, and the host will be the one to do this. She was one great host I think, she makes the whole conference wake up, and I think that should be the personality of a host.

SONY DSC

So here is the host of the conference, I just want to tell you that I am not that good with names. So I forgot their names, and wasn?t that confident to talk to them though :D

Now let me share to you the speakers, and awesome experiences and wisdom they have shared.

The first one was?Alduane?Ma?o, he is an illustrator and apparel designer. So he creates designs for the t-shirts. Let me include the information from http://visualdesign.ph so that this is complete:

?Alduane Mano was born and raised in ?The Land of Promise?, Davao City. He is a self-taught graphic artist and illustrator. Alduane finished a degree in Civil Engineering yet chose to pursue his heart for arts and media. His body of work ranges from posters, cd art to merch design, catering mainly the entertainment and clothing industry. Driven by a desire to uplift and influence this visual generation, Alduane started creating vintage looking ? cartoon based artworks for his local and international clientele?

SONY DSC

I am sorry that the picture isn?t that good and clear. I took this at the very front, I made sure I can sit in the front so that I can understand everything and get so focused on the discussion. The picture above is when the host gave plaques of appreciation to all the speakers ? this was the end part. I can?t take photos of the speakers while they?re discussing because it was too dark, only the screen is clear.

Please see their site?http://visualdesign.ph?for their works, or search them on google or facebook. For me, I really searched all these speakers so that I can see the updates of their works, and get inspired everyday!

For Alduane, here is his facebook page:?http://www.facebook.com/AlduaneMano

He showed some awesome, cool, fantastic illustrations. I appreciate his artworks, I think they?re unique and unusual, but as a girl, I think the designs are so masculine. So maybe his clients are mostly males ? just a guess. But overall, the designs are unique and very creative. He is definitely a one of a kind artist!

Now let?s move on!

SONY DSC

?

He?s Charles Buenconsejo, and I think he is the weirdest, super unique and creative artist I have ever seen personally. Most artists express who they really are through their artworks, and this guy showed it through his character ? what people see ? and it completely comes out to all his artworks.

He?s a photographer by the way, and he?s photos are unique, sometimes I don?t understand why he took those pictures. An example of the picture he took (which I wasn?t able to capture) was a picture of a dead rat on the road. He took it HD, and the rat is so clear and gloomy. ?Of course, you all know that I don?t like gloomy, dark, deadly photos. But anyway, he expresses who he is through his artworks, and I appreciate that. There are a lot of ways you can express who you really are, and artwork is a great medium.

Let me paste the bio from visualdesign.ph

?Charles Buenconsejo was born in 1984 and hails from the province of Cebu. A painting student in the Certificate of Fine Arts, UP Cebu, he moved on to experiment with photography after his father, also a photographer, introduced him to the gifts of the camera. He currently lives in Manila, dividing his time between personal projects, commercial and magazine work?

To watch his works, please open visualdesign.ph, you can also try and google his artworks. Unfortunately, I wasn?t able to find his facebook page, I sure hope I could. I just found his website portfolio on it with a contact email address, see:?http://www.every2nd.net/

SONY DSC

Guys, just click the pictures if you want to see the full sizes alright?

Anyway, here?s Dan Matutina, he?s an illustrator and I find his artworks very impressive and creative. I can remember my friends doing doodles on their notebooks when I saw his artworks. I think I should show you an example of his artwork which I find very creative, here?s one:

VersusHearts-by-Dan-Matutina-114354538[1]

?

See what I am talking about? He?s artworks are, I don?t know, it?s difficult to describe, maybe the perfect adjective here is ?speechless?? Hehehe

The artwork is I think can be described as an illustrated, doodled, image with some noise on it. I don?t know, it?s just very unique, and beautiful. I am amazed!

?Dan Matutina is a designer and illustrator whose style is a mix of handmade and digital, clean and dirty, old and modern aesthetics. He loves mixing colors with different textures and shapes to tell a story. He is a co-founder and partner at Plus63 Design Co. His body of work include collaborations with GOOD Magazine, Google Think Quarterly, Mediatemple, WIRED, Rogue Magazine, Droga5 and other tech startups, ad agencies and design studios.

Aside from art and design, his other loves include coffee and turon.?

So yes, he can?t speak straight bisaya I guess, because he?s from Leyte. He uses Tagalog, and English when he explained his crafts.

And yes of course, he created his own company/studio, and it was awesome. That?s my dream, to have my own studio as well, with all the tools inside the room, all the tools you need to use to create what?s in your imagination, that?s what ?we always dreamed of as artists.?Don?t forget to open his works here:?http://twistedfork.me/?I also follow his twitter account for updates about his artworks.?https://twitter.com/danmatutina

SONY DSCOf course the fourth speaker, a cinematographer! He?s one of my much awaited speakers, and I really love to hear his experiences and discussion about cinematography.

He?s Don Frasco, and he explained a lot of ?nose-bleeding? terms about cinematography to us. I just took pictures of the notes on the screen. Maybe I can share those notes someday, maybe, if I fully understand what this is all about.

One thing I will never forget about his explanation, is that cinematographer is the one who takes care of the light and exposure, so it?s more on the camera. And the production designer, will be the one to work for the art direction. I thought they?re just the same before, alright, it?s clear now.

He discussed a lot actually, and it wont fit here. So anyway, let me place his bio from visualdesign.ph

?Don Gerardo Frasco is a filmmaker trained in the art and craft of Cinematography. His skills derive from his initial education as a Still Photographer at the International Academy of Film and Television in 2006, and as a Director at the New York Film Academy in 2009. After graduating from the One-Year Filmmaking program, Don interned at XXXXMagazine under fashion photographer Indira Cesarine, shooting fashion videos for the online magazine. His freelance work includes experiences as Director of Photograhy, Gaffer, and Assistant Camera on several shoots. Don returned to the New York Film Academy in 2011 to complete the One-Year Cinematography program, where he became intimately experienced with the RED, 16mm, and 35mm.

Since then, Don has been the Cinematographer for over twenty short films, along with five fashion videos. He was also a creative consultant for John Henri Alston?s feature film, Red Butterfly. Don?s experience as a director has made him peerless in his sensitivity for lighting and camerawork. His cinematography is deeply influenced by the emotions of the characters, which makes his work subjective, unique, and powerful.?

By the way, his name sounds so rich, hehe, Don. I added him on facebook as well, maybe I could be updated for more cinematography topics he can share. Don?t know if he accepted me already, but I made sure to follow his public posts anyway.

But here is his main site:?http://www.donfrasco.com/

And I think he?s an owner of titay?s in Cebu? Just check out his facebook page and titay?s here:?http://www.facebook.com/titaysliloan and?http://www.facebook.com/donfrasco

?

Dwynn Trazo ? I think this man?s job is probably one of the most challenging artistic job I?ve ever known. Oh my, he discusses what information graphics is all about, and what he does. My goodness, it?s very very challenging and needs lots and lots of brain storming and most especially research and research and research.

Here?s an example of his mind blowing work:

644005_497842640228751_534119091_n[1]

?

When you open it, well lots of information are there. His job was to make a design in this whole page, that will fit lots and lots of information about the subject. It?s like journalism or essay writing, but the problem here is that you need to create a very intensive design. Which means that all the information are all connected to the subject, so you need to create a design that creates connection, trivia, and squeezed specific information into the page. You?ll need to make lots and lots of?analyzing. I am amazed by every pages he showed on the conference, he was like a teacher to the kids about, well very broad topics!

Anyway, here?s more info about him:

?Dwynn Trazo holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of San Carlos, graduating Cum Laude in 2001. He started as a Graphic Artist at Creatron (2001-2002) early in his career, then moved on to become Creative Supervisor at Bigfoot Global Solutions, Inc. maintaining various websites while briefly immersing himself in 3D projects.

In 2006, he accepted a position at Dubai-based media giant, Gulf News, as an Infographic Designer. It proved to be his best decision career-wise. Six years later, Dwynn has received 30 international awards and recognitions as visual journalist for Gulf News. That?s 25 Awards of Excellence and 1 Silver Award from SND (Society for News Design), 2 Golds and 1 Silver from WAN-IFRA (Asia Media Awards) and 1 Bronze from Malofiej (the infographic summit). Additionally, 5 of his editorial cartoons have also been recognized and published by the WPC (World Press Cartoon) for four straight years now. His eye for detail and structure, commitment, willingness and sense of leadership are what he considers the main traits that got him the accolades.

He is also a part-time musician and a lifetime fitness enthusiast.?

And unfortunately, I only found one page of him:?http://www.dwynntrazo.com/?and I think it wasn?t updated yet. He has a facebook page, it was?http://www.facebook.com/dwynn.trazo?but I haven?t seen any updates yet. Wish to see some updates about information graphics. But you can find some of his works through google images, so that you?ll see what I am talking about.

SONY DSCThe best ice breaker of the day, Harvey Tolibao! Wohoo!

Yes, right, he?s one super noisy, loud, with awesome character artist. I kept laughing when it was his turn. His talent is very basic, but cool and he focused on it and look where is he now? He?s a great comic illustrator, he?s works are awesome, as in awesome and jaw-dropping drawings of superheroes, very detailed and you can really sense the years he invested in mastering the craft. He?s amazing, that?s all I can say.

You know what? He already worked in Marvel, and DC comics, all his hard work is paid off. He said he is from Mindanao, and asked his father, also an artist, that he wanted to go to Cebu because he believed that Cebu is the place for comic artists. He was a scholar in DOST and took IT in college, but still pursued drawing!

?Harvey Montecillo Tolibao hails from Malaybalay, Bukidnon. He studied Information Technology and held various jobs including furniture designer, cartoonist, graphic artist, illustrator, web designer, tattoo artist and messenger, but he was determined to pursue his dream of becoming a comic book artist.

In 2007, Marvel gave him his big break on the Iron Man Annual. Since then he has been working as a freelance artist for Marvel Comics and is popularly known for his mini-series in collaboration with Christopher Yost in ?Psylocke?, ?X-Men: Hellbound?, ?Uncanny X-Men? and variant covers for Heroes For Hire. In 2011, he worked on ?Star Wars Knights of the Republic? and ?New Guardians? in the Green Lantern series. In 2012, DC had a deck shuffling and created a new team which gave him the chance to work on the Green Arrow series with writer Ann Nocenti.?

Here?s his facebook, you?ll see some of his amazing artworks here:?http://www.facebook.com/harvey.tolibao

SONY DSCAnd the last but not the least, the animator! This is what I?ve been waiting for! He has an awesome, amazing skills in animation. And he showed us lots of videos of his reel, they are all super cool. I didn?t know that a movie could have a 370TB size in a hard drive! I didn?t understand some of the terms he used actually, like the shots, number of shots made in a sequence, ?I don?t quite understand those stuff yet. But I think I am familiar with the terms he used when he explained something about the use of Autodesk software. He uses 3ds Max in his reel, and the results were awesome.

?The main thing asked by Singapore company ILM from him to work for transformers, was the use of cloth, he showed us his example, it was a girl dancing in pink japanese dress. It was really great, and like I was just staring at the screen for his whole discussion, like?.oohhh myy goooddnees! He rockes!

?Gem Cadiz is a Creature Technical Director for Industrial Light and Magic under Lucasfilm Animation Singapore. He started doing 3d animations as a hobby back in 2004 and got his first job as a junior video editor in 2005. He then became a 3d generalist and got into infomercial work for 2 years and about a year and a half in architectural visualization as well. He?s been with Lucasfilm Singapore ever since he got into the Jedi Masters Program back in 2009 as a Creature Dev apprentice. He has had the privilege to work on great projects such as Rango, Transformers: 3 (Dark of the Moon), Transformers 3 The Ride (Universal Studios Singapore), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (animated TV series), and more recently Pacific Rim.?

Here?s his facebook page:?http://www.facebook.com/rockgem3d?and of course his IMDB:?http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4263916/

SONY DSC?? ??SONY DSC

And here they are, the 7 speakers who helped us grow in our crafts as artists. We have the chance to ask questions, and the best question with will be chosen to receive t-shirts from the sponsors.

I did not ask any question, hehe, I just can?t think of any question yet because I was amazed by their lives and stories.

Also, after every speaker, there is a raffle, and I wasn?t chosen and did not get any t-shirts :( and what?s so frustrating is that the last raffle prize will be a bamboo tablet, huhuhu, I know right?

Anyway, University of the Visayas, the sponsor of this event showcased their ?new school called the ?New Media and Design School?, they even showed pictures of the environment where students will be learning and get inspired with the fun environment. They also explained to us that they are opening 1 year diploma for graphics, 30k, 3 months basics and focusing on the major graphic learning?for 60k, and a 1 month intensive training for 15k.

They discussed the advantages about taking courses from their new school, one is ? ?no more minor subjects! I think that is so cool.

I guess that is all for today. We received some brochures, on this little bag from the conference, and there are other information from this brochure. I might be adding this information later.

So there, it ended 7 PM.

Make sure to check their site for the sponsors okay?
