2 NATO soldiers killed; Afghan casualties mount (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Two NATO service members died Friday in roadside bombings in southern Afghanistan, while allied and Afghan forces killed three senior Taliban figures and captured 11 fighters and sympathizers, the alliance said.

Also Friday, a roadside bomb killed four civilians and wounded one in the Tirin Kot district of Uruzgan province, some 250 miles (400 kilometers) southwest of Kabul, the Interior Ministry said.

The continuing bloodshed comes despite tentative efforts by the Obama administration and other governments to establish a peace process with the Taliban to help end the 10-year war. A senior administration official has told The Associated Press that Washington plans to continue a series of secret meetings with Taliban representatives in Europe and the Persian Gulf region next year.

President Hamid Karzai said this week that his government would accept the Taliban opening a liaison office in Turkey, the Gulf state of Qatar or Saudi Arabia for the purpose of holding peace talks.

A NATO statement said an operation earlier this week in Bakwah district in Farah province resulted in the killing of a senior Taliban leader and two of his commanders, as well as a "number of additional insurgents."

Early on Friday, NATO and Afghan troops captured 11 Taliban fighters or sympathizers who provided logistical support and weapons to insurgents in five separate operations across the country, it said.

Nighttime kill-and-capture raids, in which a number of civilians have died, have become a flashpoint for anger over foreign meddling in Afghanistan. Karzai has demanded that foreign troops stop breaking into homes.

Friday's deaths brings the December toll for NATO troops killed in Afghanistan to 27, while the year's toll so far is 543. The yearly total is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. But the numbers of wounded have remained consistently high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

This year marked the high point of the international military presence in Afghanistan with more than 140,000 troops on the ground. Those numbers have started shrinking in recent weeks and are due to fall to less than 100,000 by the end of next year, as the U.S.-led NATO force prepares to end its combat role in 2014.

Faced with an overwhelming superiority in numbers and firepower by the allied and Afghan government forces, the Taliban have largely avoided direct combat. Instead, they have relied mainly on roadside bombs and small ambushes to harass and inflict losses on the security forces.

Meanwhile, a NATO helicopter made an emergency landing Friday in northern Afghanistan after having mechanical problems. A statement said there was no evidence of enemy ground fire. The crew was unharmed and the chopper was brought back to a coalition base without incident.

The coalition relies heavily on helicopters to avoid using roads that are frequently mined by the insurgents.

The Taliban have few dedicated anti-aircraft weapons, but they have destroyed or damaged dozens of aircraft using automatic rifles and other infantry weapons. In August, the guerrillas shot down a U.S. Chinook transport, killing 30 U.S. special operation troops, a translator and seven Afghan commandos.

Allawi says Iraq headed for "sectarian autocracy" (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? The head of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya political bloc said Iraq "stands on the brink of disaster" and issued a list of demands on Wednesday in a political crisis triggered by charges against a Sunni leader.

Iraqiya leader Iyad Allawi, in an editorial for the New York Times, said Iraq was heading towards a "sectarian autocracy that carries with it the threat of devastating civil war."

Sectarian tensions are running high in Iraq ten days after the last U.S. troops pulled out. Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has sought the arrest of Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, accused of running death squads.

The commentary, co-authored by Iraqiya officials Osama al-Nujaifi, the parliament speaker, and Rafie al-Esawi, the finance minister, said bloc leaders were being "hounded and threatened by Mr. Maliki, who is attempting to drive us out of Iraqi political life and create an authoritarian one-party state."

The political crisis, Iraq's worst in a year, threatens Maliki's fragile year-old coalition government, an alliance of Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish political blocs.

Nujaifi and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, on Tuesday proposed a national conference of political leaders to try to resolve the crisis and said allegations against Hashemi should be left to the courts.

But Allawi, in a separate statement, listed a series of demands before he would agree to any conference, including the release of "all detainees held on false charges" and the formation of a panel of top politicians to oversee and prevent interference in legal procedures.

Iraqiya has criticized a recent arrest campaign against hundreds of former members of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party over what some officials said was a plot to seize power after U.S. troops left.

Allawi also demanded the government implement an accord reached last year before the coalition government was formed that would have given him leadership of a new national policy council. Allawi has accused Maliki of reneging on the pact.

Allawi said "all options are still open" to resolve the crisis, including early elections and the possibility of a new candidate for prime minister.

Both Iraqiya and the Sadrist movement of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have called for new elections, currently not due until 2014.

Iraq's latest crisis was triggered by the charges against Hashemi and Maliki's request to parliament to fire Sunni Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq. Hashemi and Mutlaq are two of the most senior figures in Iraqiya.

In the editorial, Allawi, a former prime minister, said Maliki had "laid siege to our party," surrounding leaders' homes and offices in Baghdad's Green Zone with government forces.

"...as Iraq once again teeters on the brink, we respectfully ask America's leaders to understand that unconditional support for Mr. Maliki is pushing Iraq down the path to civil war," the editorial said.

"Unless America acts rapidly to help create a successful unity government, Iraq is doomed."

U.S. and Iraqi officials have been engaged in a flurry of talks to try ease tensions in a crisis that could have wider impact in the region with Iraq's Sunni and Shi'ite neighbors.

[OOC] Extra Info for A Tale of Modern Thieves

Forum rules
This forum is for OOC discussion about existing roleplays.

Please post all "Players Wanted" threads in the Roleplayers Wanted forum!

This topic is an Out Of Character part of the roleplay, ?A Tale of Modern Thieves?. Anything posted here will also show up there.

Topic Tags:

Forum for completely Out of Character (OOC) discussion, based around whatever is happening In Character (IC). Discuss plans, storylines, and events; Recruit for your roleplaying game, or find a GM for your playergroup.
This should have been received via PM, but I'll cut you all some slack and post it here for editing purposes. From this thread, I'll be adding or subtracting information. With each edit, I'll be also replying to the thread with what I added or subtracted, in case you need to find the information in a segregated area.

Here's the PM:

Just letting you know a few basic things about the roleplay.

First is first. If you're going to disappear for a while, tell me. If you don't come back for 5 days without telling me, your character(s) will be taken over until your return. If you do not return within ten days, your character will be removed from the game. If the method of removal is death, you will be able to make a new character upon PMing me to inform me of why you went on hiatus.

Next is the posting order. There will be no posting order in the sort of "free-roam" sections of the game. This is when the characters are NOT on the heists. During these periods, they will be allowed to go about their days (anything you feel is notable, but I'm not really picky. I enjoy reading about characters doing arbitrary things, it makes me feel closer to the characters) and interact with the other characters. During the heists, we WILL have a posting order, since we don't want anyone to be left out. Players can skip their turn if they feel like they have nothing to add at the moment, but I'm certain everyone will have something to do with all the tricks and treats up my sleeve.

Anything I'm forgetting? I have no clue. If I think of something, I'll post it to the OOC. The first post will probably hit soon after this message. Maybe a few hours. It all depends on how tired I am when I get around to sending all these.

Now I'm just rambling. At any rate, thanks for taking the time to read this!

Cheers!

PS: Make sure you're checking the OOC often.
PPS: Just thought of something else. I said to keep romance PG-13? Sex (though it's a touchy subject) can be implied. Keep it sort of tongue-in-cheek, though. Blushing between the characters and maybe a little awkwardness. Okay. I think that's everything.

"Those who make peaceful protest impossible will make violent protest inevitable."

Few consumers trust Facebook storefronts to prevent fraud -- 11:25:33(CST)12-27-2011

Few consumers trust Facebook storefronts to prevent fraud

San Jose, Calif. & Traverse City, Mich., Dec. 23, 2011 -- ThreatMetrix?, a leading provider of integrated cybersecurity solutions, today announced results of a joint study with The Ponemon Institute, ?Mobile Payments & Online Shopping Survey of U.S. Consumers.? The survey, which looked at U.S. consumers who self-reported they are active users of the Internet, revealed that 53% of consumers do not believe Facebook storefronts are committed to protecting them against fraudsters. A quarter of respondents (23%) were unsure about Facebook?s fraud prevention tactics.

While Google came out ahead of Facebook in terms of fraud prevention intentions, findings also showed more than half of consumers feel Google is more effective than Facebook at actually keeping them safe from online criminals. In fact, Google recently announced it is aiming to enhance its online retailing strategy, which some say will challenge Amazon.com. Google would partner with major retailers and shippers to enable consumers to shop for goods online and receive orders within a day for a low fee.

?If Google moves forward with this service, it introduces another set of fraud prevention concerns,? said Alisdair Faulkner, chief products officer, ThreatMetrix. ?With online shopping becoming more convenient and affordable for consumers, fraudsters will be even more eager to take advantage of underprepared retailers.?

Consumers Have Yet to Shop Via Social Networks

Survey results indicate that consumers have yet to really adopt online shopping habits through social networks. Only 32% of consumers surveyed have browsed a company?s Facebook page and then bought something on the company?s website. In turn, only one in five consumers indicated that they have purchased something directly within a Facebook storefront.

?Consumers have yet to adopt social shopping habits because it?s largely unavailable, with many retailers still trying to figure out their strategy in offering their products via social outlets like Facebook,? said Faulkner. ?And with the current consumer perception that Facebook isn?t doing enough to protect against security breaches, Facebook storefronts still face hurdles in gaining widespread adoption.?

The spam attack on Facebook accounts this past November did little to comfort consumers about security and fraud on the site. According to Faulkner, the security breach sparked concerns about the site?s vulnerability to hackers even though the attack didn?t compromise users? data.

?With new account registration, you have fraudsters who will sign up with social networking sites like Facebook in order to gain access to current user information,? added Faulkner. ?Having a comprehensive fraud prevention strategy is vital for social networks and strategic to their operations, especially if a user experiences spam directly within the site.?

For more information on today?s most prominent fraud threats and how to protect against fraudsters please see ThreatMetrix?s videos: ?Fraud Prevention Recommendations,? and ?Current Trends in the Online Fraud Environment?? U.S. says China not currency manipulator

Some U.S. politicians have argued that China has gained an unfair competitive edge in global markets by keeping the yuan artificially low to boost exports.

But the Treasury again shied away from taking the more serious step of labeling China a currency manipulator, saying the statutes covering such a designation "have not been met with respect to China."

The value of the yuan, which Beijing manages closely, has risen by 4 percent against the dollar this year and 7.7 percent since China dropped a firm peg against the greenback in June 2010. The appreciation, however, has been too slow in the eyes of the United States.

"The movement of the (yuan) to date is insufficient," the Treasury said in a statement following the release of its semi-annual report to Congress on international economic and exchange rate policies.

"Treasury will closely monitor the pace of appreciation and press for policy changes that yield greater exchange rate flexibility, a level playing field, and a sustained shift to domestic demand-led growth."

The Peterson Institute for International Economics recently estimated the yuan was undervalued by 24 percent against the dollar, down from 28 percent earlier in the year. It attributed the change to both Beijing's policy of gradual currency appreciation and higher Chinese inflation.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said the law that requires the administration to determine whether U.S. trade partners are deliberately undervaluing their currencies is a poor tool to push Beijing on the yuan.

Instead, the United States has tried to use international economic fora, such as the Group of 20 leading nations and the International Monetary Fund, to ramp up pressure on Beijing to move more quickly to a more-flexible currency.

The Treasury Department has not labeled country a currency manipulator since July 1994, when it cited China. A designation would require the United States to step up negotiations with Beijing on the yuan's value.

Small plane skids off runway at NE Florida airport

The Northeast Florida Regional Airport was shut down for about a half-hour after a small plane skidded off a runway.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue spokesman Jeremy Robshaw tells The St. Augustine Record ( http://bit.ly/sglpvf) that the plane sustained significant damage but two people on board were not injured in the crash Saturday afternoon.

The newspaper reports that a couple planes circled the airport waiting to land as the wreckage and equipment were cleared from the runway.

Economists spell out Canada?s best- and worst-case scenarios for 2012

The Canadian economy went on a roller-coaster ride in 2011: The year began with a bang, but momentum wobbled in the second half. So what?s in store for 2012? Most economists see slow growth, with an average forecast of 2 per cent for the year. But opinions are split on how it will play out.

More related to this story

THE BEAR: Beata Caranci, deputy chief economist (U.S. and international), Toronto-Dominion Bank

1. You see the economy growing about 1.7 per cent this year. What will drive this growth ? or hold it back?

We expect further deterioration in financial conditions in early 2012 alongside a deep recession taking root in Europe. ? Because much of Canada?s performance is dependent on global events, the knock-on effects will scar growth by weighing down consumer and business confidence, and by resulting in softer exports and commodity prices.

2. Where do you see the currency?

If European turmoil intensifies, investors will flee to the safety of the U.S. dollar, [to the detriment of] the Canadian dollar, which would likely slip to roughly 90 cents (U.S.) in the first half of the year.

3. Canada?s jobless rate is 7.4 per cent. How will the labour market fare in 2012?

Canadians probably have to brace for an unemployment rate that is likely to go up in 2012 ? in the 7.5 to 7.7-per-cent range.

4. The Bank of Canada held the line on interest rates in 2011. What will happen this year?

2012 will be marked by more of the same when it comes to the Bank?s overnight interest rate. The uncertainty and financial market turbulence created by Europe coupled with a slowdown in the broader global economy is not an environment that will be conducive to higher rates in Canada. And, against this backdrop, inflationary pressures should ease in the coming year, facilitating the decision to leave rates unchanged at ultra-low levels.

5. Inflation got a little hotter this year. What?s your outlook in 2012?

Much of the momentum in inflation this year can be attributed to the runup in energy and food prices, which likely also seeped into the prices of other goods and services. But, commodity prices have eased in recent months ? given the prospect for weaker economic growth and a rise in the unemployment rate, we think inflation will hold below 2 per cent next year.

6. Consumers remain heavily indebted. What?s in store for them?

The prognosis is not good for 2012. ? Soft job creation will equal stagnant wages, and asset growth will be constrained by ongoing equity market volatility, low interest rates and cooling home prices. ? debt levels relative to incomes will hit new highs in 2012. As debt burdens keep rising, [consumer spending] will show pretty shallow growth of 1.6 per cent.

7. In the global economy, where will be the strongest and weakest pockets of growth?

Looking at advanced economies, without question, the weakest pocket will be the euro zone, which we think will contract by roughly 1.2 per cent. Both [the U.S. and Canada] are expected to post real GDP growth just shy of 2 per cent.

Among the emerging market economies, all seem to be gearing down, but some more so than others. We think the Asian NICs [newly industrialized countries], Brazil and perhaps even India will slow down to a lesser extent than China.

8. What are the greatest risks next year to the Canadian and global economy?

The greatest risk to Canada and the global economy are one and the same ? a misstep by European policy leaders that results in a global financial crisis.

9. What are you planning on reading over the holidays?

I?m doing a right-brain, left-brain thing. I?m reading Boomerang and The Girl Who Played with Fire ? I?ll let you know which one kept me up at night.

Moody's keeps Austria's triple A rating (AP)

VIENNA ? Moody's says it is keeping Austria's triple-A status due to the nation's robust economy and plans to cap budget deficits.

A statement on the rating agency's web site notes Austria's "very high economic strength ... skilled labour force and a competitive export sector ... have helped Austria to grow faster than the European average in recent years."

The statement, issued Friday, says the agency "views positively the recent announcement by the government to introduce a balanced budget requirement into the constitution as well as attempts to limit the sovereign's exposure to the banking system's foreign operations."

Moody's says Austria's outlook remains stable but warns that could depend on the length and severity of the eurozone financial crisis, which could spill over into triple-A countries.

MANILA, Philippines ? Philippine communist guerrillas have expressed sadness over the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and predicted his country will go on to achieve progress and modernity under a socialist system.

The Communist Party of the Philippines said in a statement Thursday that Kim left behind a "shining tradition of patriotism and anti-imperialism."

North Korea has been suspected in the past of providing training and funds to the Filipino rebels.

The Philippine government, which established diplomatic ties with North Korea in July 2000, also expressed its condolences after Kim's death was announced Monday.

Warriors' Ellis sued for alleged sexual harassment (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? A former Golden State Warriors employee filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against star guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday, alleging Ellis sent her unwanted texts that included a photo of his genitals.

In her lawsuit, which also names the team, Erika Ross Smith alleges Ellis began sending her several dozen explicit messages, sometimes several times a day, starting in November 2010 through January while she worked for the team's community relations department.

The messages included lines such as, "I want to be with you," and "Hey Sexy," and periodically asked her what she was wearing or doing, according to the lawsuit.

Smith would often reply with "What do you want?" or "I am sleeping," the lawsuit claims.

"On a micro level, my client has endured unwanted harassment, has suffered and continues to suffer emotional distress and trauma," her attorney, Burt Boltuch, said at a news conference in his Oakland office. "On a macro level, this type of conduct, especially in the sports world, must stop.

"She was embarrassed. She was intimidated. She felt scared and helpless."

The Warriors deny the allegations, saying Ellis and Smith had a "consensual relationship."

At a charity event in nearby Alameda, Ellis would only say that the team has responded.

"It's a legal matter, we'll let it play its course," Ellis told KTVU-TV. "Y'know, what happens, happens."

Boltuch said his client rejected Ellis' advances and feared that no one would believe her.

"I was treated unfairly. I was let go," Smith said at the news conference. "It wasn't my fault that I was let go."

Boltuch also showed a photo of what he said was Ellis' genitalia that the guard allegedly sent to Smith's work-issued cellphone on Dec. 17, 2010, a day after he complained to the team about her job performance.

When questioned if the photo came from Ellis, Boltuch responded, "We know it came from him."

Rick Welts, the Warriors' president and chief operating officer, said in a prepared statement Wednesday that the organization takes all harassment allegations seriously.

"When we were made aware of a consensual relationship between Mr. Ellis and the Plaintiff, we did what an organization should do. We told both to stop ? promptly, directly and fairly," Welts said. "The Warriors have never taken any action against the Plaintiff for any inappropriate reason, and we deny the allegations she is making."

Boltuch rejected the team's claim.

"It was absolutely, unequivocally 100 percent not consensual," Boltuch said. "And if it was, why was my client's job duties removed and nothing was done to Mr. Ellis? To me that smacks of sexual harassment."

Ellis' agent, Jeffrey Fried, said Wednesday that he was en route to Oakland and didn't immediately have a comment.

According to the lawsuit, the Warriors changed Smith's job description and eventually fired her after Ellis' wife, Juanika Ellis, learned of the texts and complained to team executives in January.

Smith said she told team executives that Monta Ellis told her he was using a "secret cellular phone" that was being kept by the team's equipment manager and was in the name of a third party.

Smith, who has worked in similar jobs with the Washington Wizards and the Phoenix Suns, said Wednesday that it was tough to go public.

"It was pretty hard because I knew that essentially my career is over and it would be hard to re-establish myself after working so hard throughout the years," said Smith, who believes she may be blacklisted in NBA circles.

According to the lawsuit, Smith said she told team officials that Ellis' wife called her on Jan. 7 and said, "I know about the secret phone."

Shortly after that, Smith said Ellis told her that he met with team officials and general manager Larry Riley told him "not to worry," and that "everything would be swept under the rug."

The following month, Juanika Ellis apparently used her purse to push Smith into a wall during a Warriors home game, the lawsuit said. Smith said she believes that Ellis' wife believes Smith initiated the texts with the player.

"She was accusatory towards me," Smith said Wednesday.

Boltuch said the team in February reduced Smith's responsibilities, including interaction with Ellis and other players after she refused to resign.

"They offered her what I believe is a bribe," Boltuch said. "They said, `It'd be best if you resign and we'll give you some money.' She rejected it."

Boltuch said the team eliminated Smith's position in August, more than a week after she notified the team that a reporter contacted her inquiring if Ellis was "stalking" her.

The lawsuit alleges retaliation, wrongful termination and intentional infliction of emotional distress and seeks unspecified damages.

Ellis was the Warrior's leading scorer last season, averaging 24.1 points per game. His acrobatic layups and ball handling skills have made him a fan favorite though he is known to be reticent and has few endorsement deals and less notoriety than other players of his stature.

Ellis signed a $66 million, six-year deal with the Warriors in 2008 not long after winning the NBA's Most Improved Player award.

He then sustained a serious ankle injury that summer on his motorized scooter and missed most of the season, earning a 30-game suspension without pay because he wasn't supposed to be riding such a vehicle.

Ellis was recently selected as a team captain for this season.

Beckham's MLS run over?

Galaxy star reportedly struck deal with French club Paris Saint-Germain

David Beckham, 36, helped lead the Los Angeles?Galaxy to the Major League Soccer title this season.

updated 8:58 p.m. ET Dec. 20, 2011

PARIS - David Beckham is not yet a Paris Saint-Germain player, with French reports that a deal has been completed being described as "premature" by his management company.

The 36-year-old former England captain has been in talks with the French capital club, but could still accept an offer to stay at the Los Angeles Galaxy where his five-year deal ended after winning his first MLS Cup last month

"No agreement has been reached with any club yet - talks of a deal are premature," Beckham's management company, XIX Entertainment, said in a statement to The Associated Press. "David has yet to make a final decision on his future."

The French media, though, seemed confident that Beckham will join big-spending PSG, with dailies L'Equipe and Le Parisien reporting in their Wednesday editions that Beckham has agreed a deal to join the club next month.

Le Parisien claimed that Beckham would earn 800,000 euros ($1.05 million) per month at PSG, whose wealthy Qatari owners have spent more than 85 million euros ($111 million) on players since buying the club in May.

While Beckham's England career is effectively over, he is eager to remain playing for a top side so he is considered for a spot in Britain's squad for the 2012 London Olympics.

Kim Jong Il's Death Sends Jitters Across Northeast Asia (Time.com)

On Monday afternoon, a black-clad newscaster in Pyongyang, sitting in front of a bucolic backdrop of pine trees and snow-capped mountains, was barely able to get out the news. North Korea's longtime leader Kim Jong Il, she managed to say between sobs, had died on Dec. 17 of a sudden illness. "We make this announcement with great sorrow," she said, weeping.

The abrupt absence of a leader in one of the world's most unpredictable nations -- though it wasn't entirely unexpected, given Kim's visibly declining health in recent years -- sent a chill through Northeast Asia's corridors of power. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency security meeting and put the nation's military on highest alert. (See pictures of North Korea's longtime dictator Kim Jong Il.)

At a press conference on Monday, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Osamu Fujimura, expressed his condolences to the country's western neighbor -- and expressed "hope that this will not affect peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula." Fujimura said Japan had not ruled out whether to raise the level of alert of Japan's own army, but he added that Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda had called for Japan to step up efforts to collect information on North Korea's movements and cooperate on sharing this information with South Korea and China. "Japan is watching carefully," says Choe Kan-ik, managing editor of the Korean-Japanese newspaper Choson Sinbo.

Though Kim Jong Un, Kim's third son, is expected to succeed his father, any possibility of a power struggle has North Korea's neighbors worried about security and stability in a region that was rattled last year after Pyongyang sank a South Korean warship, killing 46 sailors, and proceeded to shell South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island, killing two soldiers and two civilians.

Since Kim Jong Il took power after the death of his father Kim Il Sung, the Hermit Kingdom has been steadily building its nuclear arms program, conducting two nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 and amassing missiles reportedly aimed at Japan and South Korea. Japan, along with the U.S. and South Korea, has urged the North to halt its uranium enrichment and allow international inspectors into the country. It is unclear what will become of the so-called six-party talks about the North's nuclear program, which have been stalled since 2008.

Tokyo says relations with Pyongyang cannot normalize until North Korea accounts for the abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korean agents in the 1970s and '80s. North Korea has admitted to the deaths or repatriation of 13 Japanese citizens, ostensibly to teach North Korean agents Japanese, but Tokyo insists there are more and that Pyongyang continues to withhold information on their fate. (Read more on Kim Jong Il's life.)

Will Pyongyang cause trouble for the region as it transitions to a new regime? Analysts say North Korea is likely to be too preoccupied with its own dynastic drama to create any trouble -- for the present. "North Korea is very unstable now," says Ha Tae Kyung, president of Tokyo-based Open Radio for North Korea. "The government wants to minimize the risk that could worsen [its domestic situation]."

Bradley Martin, author of Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader: North Korea and the Kim Dynasty, says, "It's not really a different government [in Pyongyang], just a continuance of the same dynasty." Even if there were players in the North who wanted to destabilize the Kim clan's grip on power -- and unsettle the region in the process -- it's too soon to tell, he says, adding: "People don't normally go to war while they're holding a funeral."

(AP) ? Sophie Clarke slayed the competition on "Survivor: South Pacific."

The brainy 22-year-old medical student from Willsboro, N.Y., overcame 39-year-old "Survivor" veteran Benjamin "Coach" Wade of Susanville, Calif., and 26-year-old high school baseball coach Albert Destrade of Plantation, Fla., to win the CBS reality competition's $1 million grand prize Sunday. Clarke earned six votes from the nine-person jury of former players.

"I think I had my finger on the pulse of the game the whole time," said Clarke after it was announced she won.

Clarke secured her place among the final three contestants on the 23rd edition of "Survivor" by forging a strong alliance from the outset and winning three individual immunity challenges, including the final physical competition, which ousted seasoned 30-year-old "Survivor" veteran Oscar "Ozzy" Lusth of Venice, Calif., from the 39-day survival contest.

"I knew the only one that could beat me at a challenge ? no offense, guys ? was Sophie," Lusth said.

Wade, who previously competed on the "Tocantins" and "Heroes vs. Villains" editions, and Lusth, who was featured on the "Cook Islands" and "Micronesia" editions, formed strong alliances with new contestants, though Lusth spent most of the game's second half on Redemption Island battling fellow voted-off castaways for a chance to return to the game.

At the end of the finale, show host Jeff Probst announced that the 24th season would be titled "Survivor: One World" and would feature two tribes competing against each other while living together on one island. "One World" is set to premiere in February.

Gifts for your pet that won't cost you a dime | Pets Best Blog

A dog with pet health insurance licks his owner.

For Pets Best Insurance

With the holiday season in full swing, it is a good time to think about the perfect gift for your pet. While there aremany great gifts you could purchase for your pet, like pet insurance, toys or treats, the following are some suggestions that your pets will love but won?t cost you anything.

1. Love and attention
Pets need human interactions and interaction with their human family members. It is important to spend quality time with your pets, whether you are walking them or playing an energetic game of catch or tug. You should spend time every day interacting with your pet and reinforcing your bond.

2. Exercise
All pets benefit from physical exercise, and exercise is crucial to your pets? physical and mental health. Dogs should receive daily walks off their property. Simply playing in the yard is not sufficient exercise for most dogs. Like humans, dogs get bored with the same old exercise routines, so vary the location and route as often as possible, to keep their walks interesting and fun.

3. A warm cozy bed
Your pet needs a comfortable place to rest. During these winter months, invite your pet into your bed for a good cuddle. If you don?t typically allow your pet in your bed, they will appreciate it all-the-more.

4. Training
All pets benefit from training. Like humans, pets learn throughout their lives, and do best when they have the opportunity to learn new things. Even old dogs can learn new things that will stimulate their brains. There are many simple training methods you can do at home. Just do a search for ?dog training? online. Remeber, it should be a fun experience for your pet and positive training methods result in positive results. Do not use punishment or force based training methods, which can be harmful to your pet.

Or Call 866-929-3807 to Add a Pet to Your Current Policy

5. At home grooming and pampering
All pets require grooming, even if they?re short haired. Run a warm bath for your pet and give him a good rub-a-dub. End the spa day by throwing a blanket into the dryer and wrapping your pup or kitty up for a cozy cuddle up after their bath. Grooming will be a necessity for the life of your pet, so you want to make it an enjoyable experience.

If you do decide to splurge on one thing for your pet this season, it should be pet insurance! You never know when your pet will need unexpected medical care. Whether it is an emergency, injury or a disease, pet health insurance will make caring for your pet more affordable and will help you make those important medical decisions easier. Companies like Pets Best Insurance are great because they reimburse a flat percentage of the actual vet bill?which can make a huge difference for you and your bank account. Texas drought takes cow numbers down by 600K (AP)

LUBBOCK, Texas ? The worst drought in Texas' history has led to the largest-ever one-year decline in the leading cattle-state's cow herd, raising the likelihood of increased beef prices as the number of animals decline and demand remains strong.

Since Jan. 1, the number of cows in Texas has dropped by about 600,000, a 12 percent decline from the roughly 5 million cows the state had at the beginning of the year, said David Anderson, who monitors beef markets for the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. That's likely the largest drop in the number of cows any state has ever seen, though Texas had a larger percentage decline from 1934 to 1935, when ranchers were reeling from the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, Anderson said.

Anderson said many cows were moved "somewhere there's grass," but lots of others were slaughtered. He said that in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana and Arkansas, about 200,000 more cattle were slaughtered this year, a 20 percent increase over last year.

That extra supply could help meet increased demand from China and other countries, but the loss of cows likely will mean fewer cattle in future years.

"Consumers are going to pay more because we're going to have less beef," Anderson said. "Fewer cows, calves, less beef production and increasing exports."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that beef prices will increase up to 5.5 in 2012, in part because the number of cattle has declined. That follows a 9 percent increase in beef prices in the past year.

Oklahoma, the nation's second-largest cattle producer, also saw about a 12 percent drop in cows, Oklahoma State University agriculture economist Derrell Peel said.

Anderson said beef production nationally will be down 4 percent next year.

In Texas, the problem is primarily due to the worst single-year drought in the state's history. From January through November the state got just 46 percent of its normal rainfall of about 26 inches.

The drought was the result of a La Nina weather pattern, which brings drier than normal conditions to the southwestern states. Forecasters have said La Nina is back, meaning another dry year for Texas, Oklahoma and other nearby states.

The lack of rain coupled with blistering summer heat caused pastures to wither, leaving rancher with the choice of buying feed for the cattle or selling them.

Betsy Ross, a 75-year-old rancher from the small central Texas community of Granger, said she sold all but 80 of the 225 grass-fed animals she had in January. With feed costs up 40 percent and her pasture parched, Ross said she didn't have any other option.

"It's not a profitable year, heavens no," she said. "If you can't keep them on grass when they're grass fed you're not going to make any money."

About 200 miles north in Sulphur Springs, Texas, part-time rancher Dwyatt Bell said producers in his part of the state sold off up to half their herds. Bell said high prices for cattle have helped offset increases expenses, but many ranchers still are struggling to stay afloat.

"It's been a rough year," he said.

Across Texas, the drought has caused an estimated $5.2 billion in losses to farmers and livestock producers, and that figure is expected to rise

Nationally, the number of cows has dropped by an estimated 617,000 this year, a 2 percent decline from the 30.9 million animals on Jan. 1. That number would be larger, but states in northern plains such as North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska, increased their cow herd.

Anderson said it's unclear whether high beef prices would hurt U.S. sales or limit exports. The U.S. is the world third largest consumer of beef per capita at 85.5 pounds per year. Uruguay is first at 137 pounds per capita.

"Exports have been the strongest part of beef demand all year and they're expected to remain so but higher prices should constrain their growth," he said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Fans of Christopher Hitchens are doing more than mourning his death: They're buying his books.

"Arguably," an essay collection released in September, and "God is Not Great," his 2007 best-seller, were both in the top 100 on Amazon.com as of Friday afternoon. Three of his books, including the memoir "Hitch-22," were in the top 6 on Amazon's list of "Movers and Shakers," the fastest sellers.

Hitchens died Thursday at age 62 after an 18-month battle with cancer of the esophagus. He was known for his fiery and eloquent rhetoric, for his militant atheism and defiance of political category.

Publisher Twelve Books announced Friday that a memoir about his illness he had been working on, "Mortality," would come out next year.

Sale of Lethal Injection Drug Sodium Thiopental to Be Restricted in Europe (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in S?ddeutsche Zeitung.

(BERLIN) -- The European Union is set to restrict the sale to the United States of one of the main active substances needed for lethal injections. According to information obtained by the S?ddeutsche Zeitung, the export of sodium thiopental will only be possible by special permission, beginning Friday, posing a major problem for the US justice system.

The Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) is to publish a new, uniform set of authorized export regulations, valid for all short or intermediate-acting barbituric acids. One of them is the easy-to-use and fast-working anesthetic sodium thiopental, which is used to execute criminals in the states of Ohio and Washington. In 33 other states, sodium thiopental is a key ingredient in other toxic cocktails used to kill inmates. (See TIME's 10 Biggest U.S. News Stories of 2011.)

Approximately 100 people are executed by American authorities every year. But in the past few months, supplies of the drug have become scarce. The only manufacturer based in the US, Hospira, is unwilling to continue to make its product available for lethal injections, and under American law it is not allowed to simply change the injection "recipe." To do that, a complicated approval procedure is required. So authorities -- who have been postponing executions as a result of the difficulty in finding supplies -- have been seeking other sources such as those in the EU.

Anti-death penalty and other human rights groups have pushed for the EU decision to now require special permission to export to countries outside of Europe. The most prominent supporter of the move is Germany's Minister of Economy and head of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), Philipp R?sler. In an earlier role as Minister of Health he had written to German manufacturers of sodium thiopental to encourage them not to sell the drug to the US.

After changing jobs, he introduced to the Commission a bill to create a regulation valid Europe-wide that would effectively prevent the export of thiopental to the US. Initially, the proposal met with resistance from other states, but it has now been approved by the majority of the 27 member states.

Woman killed in New York elevator accident (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A woman was crushed to death on Wednesday by an elevator that began moving as she was stepping on board, authorities said.

The freak accident occurred mid-morning in a 25-story office building at 285 Madison Avenue, near Grand Central Terminal, according to the Fire Department of New York.

The woman was about halfway into the elevator when it shot upward, a fire department spokeswoman said. She was lifted up and crushed between the shaft and the elevator, she said.

The doors remained open as the elevator rose.

Two other people on board the elevator suffered minor injuries.

It was not immediately clear how far the elevator rose. The cause of the malfunction is under investigation.

The building houses a number of advertising agencies that traditionally have had offices along Madison Avenue in midtown Manhattan.

Russian editor fired after Putin cursed in photo (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? The editor of a prominent Russian news magazine said he had been fired after the weekly printed a photograph featuring an obscene message addressed to Vladimir Putin as part of extensive reports on alleged fraud in a December 4 parliamentary election.

Maxim Kovalsky said on Tuesday he had been dismissed as editor of Kommersant-Vlast over the magazine's Monday edition, which included several articles examining alleged electoral violations favoring Prime Minister Putin's United Russia party.

The dismissal appeared to serve notice that Putin still holds vast influence over the Russian media, despite mass protests against him and a decline in his ruling party's support at the election.

"The reason is the issue about the election," Kovalsky told Reuters. He believed the Kremlin had put pressure on Kommersant Publishing House owner Alisher Usmanov, a billionaire metals tycoon, and that he had no regrets about the publication.

"I acted absolutely consciously and believe I did the right thing," he said.

A spokeswoman for Metalloinvest, a company owned by Usmanov, confirmed that Kovalsky and the head of the magazine's parent company Kommersant-Holding, Andrei Galiyev, had been fired.

Asked for comment, the spokeswoman sent a report on gazeta.ru, a news site also linked to Usmanov, that cited Usmanov as saying unspecified material that appeared in recent issues of Kommersant-Vlast had violated journalistic ethics.

"These materials border on petty hooliganism," the news site quoted Usmanov, a billionaire who is part-owner of the London soccer club Arsenal, as saying.

Kommersant Publishing House director Demyan Kudryavtsev told Reuters he had tendered his resignation to Usmanov over the photograph, which he said he had not been aware of before publication. He said he expects a decision later his month.

The shakeup at Kommersant, whose publications include a leading daily by the same name, followed protests by tens of thousands of Russians over alleged election fraud in the biggest opposition rallies of Putin's 12-year-old rule.

Tens of thousands of Russians protested on Saturday over the parliamentary election they said was rigged in favour of United Russia, calling for the annulment of the official results and a new election.

Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev have made clear that is out of the question.

Meeting with leaders of the four parties that won seats in the State Duma lower house, Medvedev said that all official complaints will be heard but that the Duma will hold its first session on December 22 -- two days before new protests are planned.

Voters sharply reduced the ruling party's parliamentary majority but opponents say the official results were inflated. Allegations of fraud have spread on the Internet and in some newspapers, while they are largely ignored by state media.

Monday's issue of Kommersant-Vlast had a large section on the election, including articles on alleged violations.

ALLEGED FRAUD

The cover featured a photograph of Putin and a headline with a play on United Russia's name that suggested ballot-stuffing, adding: "How the elections were falsified: eyewitness accounts."

A photograph on page 29 showed a ballot paper marked for the liberal Yabloko party and scrawled with the comment: "Putin, fuck off!."

The photo caption read: "A ballot filled out correctly, deemed invalid."

Kommersant-Vlast deputy editor Veronika Kutsyllo said the magazine published the photograph because it was a document that she believed suggested irregularities. She said she planned to resign.

Kutsyllo said the ballot was cast in London, where Russian citizens were able to vote, and that it was a valid ballot because it was marked for one party.

Putin, president from 2000-2008 and now prime minister, will run for a new six-year term as president in a March 4 vote.

Opinion polls show he remains Russia's most popular politician and is likely to win the presidency, but his ratings have fallen and he was booed at a martial arts event last month.

He alienated many Russians in September by announcing he planned to swap jobs with Medvedev after the March presidential election, leaving many worried he could now rule until 2024.

Putin has long kept a tight grip on the traditional media, although state television showed footage of tens of thousands of people protesting in Moscow on Saturday against the alleged electoral fraud, without showing calls for him to step down.

Two other presidential candidates took steps to formalize their bids on Tuesday, but both are dismissed by the protest leaders as figures who do not present a threat to Putin.

Flamboyant nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky was nominated at a congress of his LDPR party that was given prominent coverage on state television.

Sergei Mironov, leader of the Just Russia party, filed his candidacy papers. Mironov, 58, ran for president in 2004 but supported Putin. He has become more critical after being ousted as speaker of the upper house of parliament this year by United Russia.
