Paintings-the Expression Of The Soul

By: John Flynn

Paintings add a great source of pleasure to our lives. They not only give pleasure to our eyes but also mark a different level of attachment between us and nature. Although paintings come in different moods like traditional and modern art but both of them carries a different kind of passion in them. Paintings are actually deeply connected to the soul of artist and thus they have a different power in them to go and touch the soul of viewers also.
Paintings show the deep and hidden thoughts of a person either it is a painting of nature or a living being. Paintings usually enrich a deep understating in our hearts. These are pieces of paper or frame which actually are non-living but still speaks a lot in a silent way and can pass there message to viewer in simple way.
A beautiful painting doesnt always mean that it must have some sense of cheers in it. But a beautiful painting is that which is able to impress us and grab our senses and mark an unforgettable memory in our minds.
Many of the painters devote their whole life to the art of paintings creations. Some go for inspirational paintings and some for realistic ones. It will not be wrong if we consider that paintings are spiritual and heart full expressions. A painting shows the perception of the artist towards the world. But there is one thing that is true about painting and that is every painting seems to be different from the eyes of viewers. It never conveys the same message to each and every person but is different for different persons. This is best creativity about the paintings.
Art of paintings started from centuries ago, even before the people learn the art of speaking and expressing themselves and this is proved by many of the centurys old paintings and stone carvings.
Painting is not less than worship. Every culture has its own type of paintings and every painting depicts a different emotion in it. Wayne weberbauers wildlife fine art and landscape oil painting are such types of painting which express the wild life in a very beautiful and exceptional way.

PST: Is Neymar showing his future greatness?

As expected, Neymar is making the Men?s Olympic soccer tournament his own, though as Spain?s shocking exit reminds us, Olympic soccer shouldn?t be taken for granted. This may be a turbo charged under-23 tournament, but there?s plenty of talent involved.

That?s what makes what Neymar?s doing so special. The 20-year-old Brazilian attacker, already acclaimed as one of the world?s best (without having set foot in Europe), as two goals in two games, a description which vastly understates his influence. He?s been the key cog in a Brazil attack that?s scored six goals in two games.

You could argue that a world class player dominating the Olympics isn?t so newsworthy, but when somebody like Luis Suarez goes scoreless in two games, it?s difficult to argue goals are there for the taking. A look back at the recent history of stars in the Olympics shows there are just as many Suarezes as Neymars. While some legends have used the summer games to build their legacy, others have failed to make their mark.

(MORE: A few words on the men?s soccer tournament)

Here?s a quick look at the recent history:

2008 ? Lionel Messi was just beginning his ascent to world domination when he touched down in China. He scored Argentina?s first goal of the tournament in a win over Cote d?Ivoire but only managed one more in the Albiceleste?s final five games (a gift presented him by a Dutch giveaway). Finishing a perfect 6-0-0 record, Argentina claimed gold, their only hiccup a penalty kick shootout win over the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

2004 ? Cristiano Ronaldo was only 19 when he represented Portugal at the Athens games. The Seleccao disappointed, finishing at the bottom of Group D, though the young Ronaldo got on the scoresheet in the 40th minute of a Portugal win over Morocco. Coming off his first year at Manchester United, Ronaldo still impressed, putting on a memorable display of skill in his team?s opener against Iraq. The Iraqis went on to win the game, 4-2.

2000 ? The Sydney games were star-studded, in hindsight. Ronaldinho was on Brazil?s squad, scoring in the 94th minute to earn the Selecao extra time in the quarterfinals (they?d lose to Cameroon on a golden goal). A 20-year-old Xavi Hern?ndez helped Spain to silver, scoring twice (including in the final) as La Roja averaged two goals per game. But Samuel Eto?o, then 19, would end up claiming gold, scoring his only goal of the tournament in the final, eventually converting a penalty kick in the shootout.

1996 ? Real Madrid legend Ra?l scored twice for Spain, but a 20-year-old Ronaldo, fresh off his second season at PSV, was the man to watch. In six games, Ronaldo scored five times as Brazil took home bronze. Only Hern?n Crespo and teammate Bebeto had more goals in the tournament.

1988 ? Two strikers that would go on to win world titles featured in South Korea. Jurgen Klinsmann scored four times for one of West Germany?s final teams, the squad claiming the bronze in a 3-0 third-place match win over Italy. Brazil?s Romario, however, would be the tournament?s leading scorer, posting seven goals. Unfortunately, it was one too few, as Brazil lost the gold medal match to the Soviet Union, 2-1.

1984 ? Roger Milla got Cameroon?s Olympics off to a strong start, scoring 32 minutes in to the Indomitable Lions? first match (against powerhouse Yugoslavia). Cameroon would eventually lose that match and fail to get out of group, with Canada beating them 3-1 in Boston in Group B?s third game. Milla finished with that one goal.

1976 ? Michel Platini and Hugo Sanchez were drawn into the same group, with only Platini?s France making it out. He scored three times in group play before Les Bleus ran into East Germany in the quarterfinals, losing 4-0. Sanchez had a late consolation goal in his meeting with Platini?s France, but he would be kept off the scoresheet against Israel and Guatemala.

1972 ? Falc?o?started two of Brazil?s three games (and appeared in all of them), but it was a poor tournament for the Selecao. Only 19 years old and yet to start his professional career with Internacional, Falc?o wasn?t in much of a position to help. They finished bottom of a group that included Hungary, Denmark, and Iraq. The tournament?s star was Poland?s Kazimierz Deyna, who scored nine goals in seven games, leading his team to gold. Deyna would eventually become a star in the NASL with San Diego, ending his career with the team as it moved into the Major Indoor Soccer League.

Diagnostic imaging increases among stage IV cancer patients on Medicare

Diagnostic imaging increases among stage IV cancer patients on Medicare [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 30-Jul-2012

Journal of the National Cancer Institute

The use of diagnostic imaging in Medicare patients with stage IV cancer has increased faster than among those with early-stage (stages I and II) disease, according to a study published July 30 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The costs of diagnostic imaging have increased more rapidly than the overall costs of cancer care, making diagnostic imaging the fastest-growing division of Medicare-reimbursed services. The net costs of cancer care are the highest in the last year of life; yet little is known about the use of high-cost imaging in cancer patients during the last year of life.

In order to determine the usage of high-cost imaging in cancer patients at the end of life, Yue-Yung Hu, M.D., M.P.H. and colleagues in the Center for Outcomes and Policy Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program at the University of Wisconsin, looked at claims within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database between 1994 and 2009 for computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and nuclear medicine scans for patients diagnosed with stage IV breast, colorectal, lung, or prostate cancer between 1995-2006. The rate of imaging per-patient per-month of survival was determined for each phase of care. For reference, trends in imaging use in early-stage patients with the same tumor types during the same time period were also considered.

The researchers found that most patients with stage IV breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer undergo high-cost imaging procedures throughout the course of their care and that the usage of imaging has steadily increased between 1995 and 2006. The increase may reflect a lack of guidelines in this area or the use of imaging to guide symptom management, detect disease progression and assess treatment effect. "Because scans help clinicians determine whether a change in (or cessation of) treatment is indicated, the expanding use of advanced imaging in stage IV disease is likely a manifestation of the increasing number and types of treatment options available to these patients," the authors write. "Imaging, although it often leads to (appropriate) palliative measures, may also distract patients from focusing on achievable end-of-life goals, require them to spend more of their limited time in medical care settings and/or provoke anxiety." The authors point out the importance of examining such patient-centered outcomes in future research to define the role of advance imaging in Stage IV solid tumors.

In an accompanying editorial, Drs. Robin Yabroff and Joan Warren, of the Health Services and Economics Branch at the National Cancer Institute, feel that assessing the appropriateness of care for patients with stage IV disease is complex. "Physicians tend to overestimate survival for terminally ill cancer patients, which may influence their treatment and related imaging recommendations," the editorialists write. "Development of practice guidelines for advanced imaging in patients with stage IV disease, with explicit statements about the state of evidence will be critical, particularly for care outside of the window surrounding patient diagnosis."

Automotive Industry ETFs in Focus - Zacks.com

Unlike consumer staples, the consumer discretionary industry is highly sensitive to economic cycles (The Comprehensive Guide to Consumer Staples ETFs). At the time of recession when consumers lose confidence in the economy, only necessities are taken into account and savings tend to increase. Consequently, spending on consumer discretionary is the first to drop.

Consumer discretionary involves expending the discretionary income or disposable income on items that are not strictly necessary. Examples include buying new cars, eating out at restaurants and vacations.

At the time of recession, the stock prices of companies supplying discretionary goods and services thereby tend to be low or undervalued. Investors should take advantage of the situation while buying undervalued discretionary stocks during times of recession and selling them during a bullish phase or when the economy recovers (Play A Consumer Recovery With These Discretionary ETFs).

We will highlight one segment of consumer discretionary industry that looks to be both particularly sensitive to economic events and beaten down over the past one year period; the automotive sector (Which Auto ETF Should You Take For A Ride?).

In January-June 2012, General Motors Company (GM) led with a 18.1% market share in the U.S., followed by Ford Motor Co. (F) with a 15.7% market share, Toyota Motors Corp. (TM) came in with 14.4% market share, Chrysler-Fiat with a 11.5% market share, and Honda Motor Co. (HMC) and Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY) took up the last two spots among the top 10, with 9.6% and 7.9% market shares, respectively.

Auto Industry Outlook

Due to a massive structural change after the global economic meltdown of 2008, the global auto industry is expected to be ruled by automakers and suppliers based in the six major auto markets: China, India, Japan, Korea, Western Europe and the U.S. (If China Slumps, Avoid These Three Country ETFs)

The Big Three Detroit automakers (GM, Ford and Chrysler), who command a big chunk of the U.S. auto market, bounced back with help from strong demand in foreign locations. They restructured their product portfolios and responded to strong pent-up desire for more and newer automobiles both at home and abroad.

However, despite some of these recent positives, a few are worried that the relatively cyclical sector could face some significant trouble in the months ahead. This could be especially true if foreign markets remain under pressure or if America slumps back into a double dip.

In either of these cases, investors could see some serious volatility in the auto market, suggesting that a basket approach could be the way to play the sector with lower levels of risk. Below, we highlight two automotive ETFs which offer up broad exposure to a number of companies in the space and could be interesting choices, either long or short, for investors who are once again focused in on the car market:

First Trust NASDAQ Global Auto Index Fund (CARZ)

CARZ tracks the NASDAQ Global Auto Index which looks to evaluate firms in the automotive industry based on a variety of data inputs. The index looks to do this by including companies with the following three features- companies have to be listed on a global exchange, have a market cap of at least half a billion, and trade more than $1 million in volume for a three month period.

This approach produced this fund that has total holdings of 35 stocks, assets under management of $4.6 million and trades in volumes of 1,382 per day (Guide to the 25 Most Liquid ETFs).

Currently, the fund has most exposure in large cap securities with a very small proportion invested in mid cap and small cap securities. From an individual security perspective, the fund is pretty concentrated with top 10 holdings making up 60% of the total assets.

Top holdings include Honda, Toyota and Daimler AG. ?The fund charges an expense ratio of 70 basis points and it should be noted that the fund has performed terribly in the past one year period, delivering a negative return of 28.3%.

Given the promising trends for cyclical stocks at this time, some investors may want to consider buying into this automotive ETF in the short term. If the economy continues to rebound, we could see further gains in the media automotive space making this a potentially good time to get into this surging sector.

Currently, CARZ has a Zacks ETF Rank of 4 or ?Sell?

Global X Auto ETF (VROM)

Another fund which investors can consider for exposure to the automotive industry is VROM which tracks S-Network Global Automotive Index. This benchmark is a modified cap weighted index of publicly traded companies engaged in the production of automobiles, automobile parts, tires, and related activities.

It includes the fifty largest and most actively traded companies worldwide that are principally engaged (derive greater than 50% of revenues from sources listed above) in the automobile industry.

VROM provides exposure to a somewhat larger basket of automotive companies than its First Trust counterpart. The fund holds a total of 53 automotive companies with assets under management of $2.3 million and a volume of 1,300.

Like its competitor, the fund also appears to be concentrated in the top 10 holdings with 55% of assets invested in these securities. From individual company perspective Toyota, Daimler AG and Ford take the top three positions.

The fund charges 5 basis points less in expenses than CARZ and over the past one year period it has delivered a negative return of 27.1% (Three Cyclical ETFs That Are Surging Higher).?

First Pisa, now Rome's Colosseum - it's leaning

ROME (Reuters) - The ancient Colosseum of Rome, where gladiators fought for their lives, is slanting about 40 cm (16 inches) lower on the south side than on the north, and authorities are investigating whether it needs urgent repairs.

Experts first noticed the incline about a year ago and have been monitoring it for the past few months, Rossella Rea, director at the 2,000-year-old monument, said in an article published in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera on Sunday.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, another of Italy's most popular attractions, was reopened in 2001 after being shut for more than a decade as engineers worked to prevent it from falling over and to make it safe for visitors.

Rea has asked Rome's La Sapienza University and environmental geology institute IGAG to launch a study on the phenomenon, with investigations to be concluded in a year.

Tests have also started to observe the effects that traffic on nearby busy roads may have on the monument.

Professor Giorgio Monti, from La Sapienza's construction technology department, warned there may be a crack in the base below the amphitheatre.

"The slab of concrete on which the Colosseum rests, which is like a 13-metre (yard)-thick oval doughnut, may have a fracture inside it," he told the newspaper.

He said intervention could be necessary if the concerns are confirmed, along the lines of stabilization work carried out in Pisa, but he said it was too early to judge what kind of intervention would be most suitable.

The Colosseum - famous for hosting bloody gladiator fights in the days of the Roman Empire - attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists and is usually packed with visitors.

How a low-protein diet predisposes offspring to adulthood hypertension

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Studies have shown that the offspring of mothers on a low-protein diet are more likely to develop hypertension as adults. Now, Drs. Gao, Yallampalli, and Yallampalli of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston report that in rats, the high maternal testosterone levels associated with a low-protein diet are caused by reduced activity of an enzyme that inactivates testosterone, allowing more testosterone to reach the fetus and increase the offspring's susceptibility to adulthood hypertension.

Fetal programming is a term used to describe the impact of maternal stress on an unborn child's physical characteristics at birth, as well as its long-term health. The placenta is thought to be a major contributor to fetal programming due to its critical roles in hormone production and nutrient transport, as well as its susceptibility to environmental disruptions.

Recently, a study found that protein restriction doubles the plasma testosterone levels in pregnant rats. Elevated testosterone levels are associated with pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia and polycystic ovarian syndrome in humans, and emerging evidence suggests that testosterone may play a role in fetal programming of hypertension.

Gao et al. hypothesized that the increased testosterone levels were caused either by increased activity of an enzyme that produces testosterone or by decreased activity of an enzyme that reduces testosterone, specifically Hsd17b2, which converts testosterone to a less potent androgen, androstenedione.

The team found that Hsd17b2 expression in rats was affected by protein restriction in two parts of the placenta. It was increased in the junctional zone, which is responsible for hormone production, but was reduced in the labyrinth zone, which is essential for nutrient transport from mother to fetus and also acts as a protective barrier.

Based on this novel finding, Gao et al. propose that the reduction in Hsd17b2 expression in the protective labyrinth zone may allow more testosterone to reach the fetus and play a role in fetal programming of hypertension.

The finding that Hsd17b2 was the only enzyme for testosterone production affected by gestational protein restriction suggests an important role for Hsd17b2 in regulating the testosterone levels at the maternal-fetal interface; further research is needed to determine its exact functions.

Comcast Debuts 305-Meg Internet, Doubles Speeds For Two ...

By Todd Spangler ? Multichannel News, 7/24/2012 10:18:14 AM

Comcast, looking to grab broadband bragging rights from verizon Communications, announced it is launching a 305 Megabit per second service in markets in the Northeast U.S. ? priced at a hefty $300 per month ? while also doubling the speeds for current customers of its 25 and 50 Megabit per second services for no additional cost.

Comcast?s Xfinity Platinum Internet service, with download speeds of up to 305 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 65 Mbps, will cost $299.95 per month either standalone or bundled with TV and voice. Included in the service for no additional charge are Xfinity Signature Support (a $9.95-per-month value), which provides customers 24-hour tech support; a dedicated ?personal communications consultant? assigned to the account; and a DOCSIS 3.0-based wireless gateway.

Comcast is launching the broadband enhancements and offerings in markets including Boston, Hartford, Conn., Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Pa., Wilmington, Del., Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Va., and New Jersey.

?With the launch of Xfinity Platinum Internet, Comcast continues to be a leader when it comes to delivering the fastest broadband speeds in the U.S.,? Cathy Avgiris, Comcast?s executive vice president and general manager of data and communications services at Comcast, said in announcing the service.

Last month, verizon launched FiOS Quantum with a top speed of 300 Mbps in many markets, and it also hiked pricing and connection speeds for most existing customers. The FiOS 300-Meg service, which provides 65 Mbps upstream, is available only on a standalone basis for $209.99 monthly with no contract or $204.99 with a two-year contract.

The FiOS 300 Mbps and Comcast?s 305 Mbps services are largely about staking marketing claims ? which have been a source of contention between the two.

Last month, following a complaint by verizon, the Council of Better Business Bureaus? National Advertising Division ruled that Comcast should stop making the unqualified claim that its Xfinity Internet service is the ?fastest in the nation.? However, NAD found that Comcast would be able to back up a claim that it is one of the three fastest ISPs in the nation, according to a 2011 PC Magazine study, or claim that it is the fastest Internet option for most consumers in its service areas where Verizon?s FiOS service is not available.

According to Comcast, the speed increases for Xfinity Blast (from 25 to 50 Mbps) and Extreme 50 (from 50 to 105 Mbps) customers represent the seventh time since 2002 that Comcast has increased speeds for its customers.

?More customers are simultaneously connecting to the Internet through tablets, laptops and smartphones within their homes. Whether it?s to stream movies, upload photos, video chat with family and friends, or catch all of the Olympics action live on their tablets and connected devices, we want to ensure these consumers are getting the speeds they need,? Avgiris said. ?We will continue to increase speeds as customer demands evolve.?

    We would love your feedback!

HIV in the American South: Q&A with 'deepsouth' documentary ...

8 photos, 1 video

The Darkroom interviews documentary filmmaker Lisa Biagiotti about ?deepsouth,? a new documentary about HIV in the South premiering this week in Washington D.C. The premiere coincides with the week-long International AIDS Conference.

deepsouth TRAILER (official) from Lisa Biagiotti on Vimeo.

?deepsouth? is a poetic and grounding exploration into the lives of those affected by HIV in the American South. After 30 years, the global epidemic has overshadowed the fight at home, where HIV has never looked like this before. Facing a broken health system and a culture of denial, Southerners must create their own solutions to survive.

YOU SAY THE GLOBAL EPIDEMIC HAS OVERSHADOWED THE FIGHT AT HOME, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CURRENT STATE OF HIV IN THE U.S. TODAY, AND PARTICULARLY IN THE SOUTH?

I have seen more press about HIV in the South in the last week than I have in the last three years. HIV is a tired topic, an unglamorous cause and in our backyard. The most common response I receive when I tell people I?m working on a documentary about HIV in the South is: ?The Deep South of the United States??

We?d like to believe we?ve conquered HIV in this country. The scientific progress has been absolutely exciting. Before there was Occupy Wall Street, there was the exultant Act Up. The AIDS movement is historic and unprecedented, and we should never forget that. But that is history, and the legacy of AIDS activism did not extend to some parts of this country. The rural South has an alternative reality and a legacy of its own: the imprint of slavery, the clash of Civil Rights and the brunt of poverty. I dare say, it is one of the last surviving cultures in this country. It is beautiful and tragic and everything in between.

Today, HIV increasingly affects marginalized communities in the South where there is little activism, feeble social infrastructure and a web of complicated issues that we can?t test and treat our way out of.

The epidemic in the South is not actually new, although the media frames it this way. The statistics have been sobering, the reports have been readily available, infection rates have been trending ? and for a long time. But there hasn?t been the momentum or rally cries around the Southern epidemic until recently.

WHAT LED YOU TO MAKE THIS DOCUMENTARY?

In 2009, I came across some startling statistics on the South while working on some stories on HIV and homophobia in Jamaica. I noticed a lot of contextual similarities between Jamaica and the Deep South in terms of the legacy of slavery, religious traditions and a strong sense of community and cultural ties.

When I went on my first road trip through the South in June 2010, I was so confused. I was armed with the data (50 percent higher infection rates in the South, the most AIDS deaths, AIDS as one of the leading causes of death among African American women?), but it didn?t prepare me for what I experienced. The more I drove and the more people I spoke to, the more I realized that HIV was not really about HIV.

Part of the problem has been the amazing success of the first movement. I would never want to diminish it because it is exemplary and triumphant in so many ways, but it has prevented us from seeing the reality of the domestic epidemic, especially in quiet, rural places in the South, where people are marginalized, disenfranchised and no longer vocal. HIV became my GPS into the fragile areas of our country with broken systems, patchwork solutions and a sense of resignation and making-do.

In a sense, it?s a little ironic because these are the same streets Civil Rights activism was forged and won. But perhaps, it?s easier to fight for freedom than it is the taboo topics of sex, sexuality and behavior that shakes the bedrock of Southern culture.

WHY THE TITLE ?deepsouth??

We chose the title ?deepsouth? ? one word, all lowercase ? to represent this geographical, cultural term, but in a different way. The diminutive capitalization and allision of the two words represent a more familiar and intimate treatment of the epic Deep South of Civil War regalia and Civil Rights brigades. The film is about the Deep South ? the environmental hazards of a region and the contextual factors that continue to drive social inequity and spread the disease.

WHAT KINDS OF MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV DID YOU ENCOUNTER WHILE REPORTING IN THE SOUTH?

I found the same misconceptions I find in an urban setting: ?It?s a white gay man?s disease; it infects drug users and sex workers; black men on the downlow infect black women. We behave, they don?t. We use protection, they don?t. Tsk, tsk, tsk?you brought it upon yourself.?

?deepsouth? is not about black people with AIDS. That concept is seductive, ?them, not us,? but it is not what?s happening. ?deepsouth? is not about the ?new face? of HIV/AIDS ? these faces have been there, tallied in the statistics, but we have not recognized them in the latest awareness campaigns and/or anecdotal newspaper leads.

The reality is that HIV is less about safe sex and more about safety nets. HIV is symptomatic of so many other social ills. Silence, stigma and judgment create layers of secrecy. They can?t be ?fixed? without a deep dive into the underlying reasons behind why people are quiet, what they?re ashamed of and why they?re afraid.

We start our stories about HIV at starting points that are too late. It?s not about the time you didn?t have a condom. It?s about how we define protection. It?s not only about black women getting infected by black men. It?s why black men in the South can?t be gay or bisexual.

YOU FOLLOW THREE MAIN STORIES IN THE DOCUMENTARY. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THESE CHARACTERS; WHAT?S THEIR ROLE IN UNDERSTANDING THE BIG PICTURE?

In the last two and a half years, I?ve driven 13,000 miles and conducted 400 interviews. There is a lot that is not in the documentary, but we found recurring themes: inertia, isolation and Do-It-Yourself everything.

We thought the best way to address these themes was through a few narratives that exemplified them. I hate to use labels, but I did seek out ?a young, gay, black man living with HIV in a rural area? to show the isolation of his home life and the supportive gay family he had two hours away in the city. Again, most people don?t want to talk about why black men can?t be gay in the South.

The second storyline deals with a small, rural AIDS agency whose shrinking funds prompts the community to pitch in and help out with their annual HIV retreat. Two best friends do everything themselves in order to create a space where people living with HIV can connect and share their stories.

The third storyline gets us around the South and out of it to the politics of the disease and the bureaucracy that houses it. An Alabama activist spends 120 days on the road fighting for equitable funding and policy changes. She too is isolated and doing it herself and really going in circles for incremental progress.

CAN YOU ALSO DISCUSS SOME OF THE THEMES OF THE MINI-STORIES YOU INCLUDE IN THE FILM?

There are four mini-stories in the film: an animated map that correlates slavery to poverty to HIV, the sermon of a Baptist pastor, the long drive of a rural social worker and the sex education lesson of a health teacher.

Because HIV is not siloed to the medical realm, we wanted to connect it to some of the contextual and cultural factors at play across the South: the role of the Church, the barriers of the land/geography and the unspoken lessons of a sex ed classes.

WHAT OBSTACLES DID YOU FACE WHILE FILMING ?deepsouth??

I reported for more than a year before we turned the camera on our subjects. And there were several other ways we thought of telling the story: the building of a clinic, a social worker and her clients, etc., but none of them felt right or encompassing enough.

The issue is so complex, multi-layered and sensitive. It did take some convincing for Josh to be on camera. I?m sure Kathie wondered why we were following her into the bathroom. Monica and Tammy trusted us that we would conceal the identities of any retreat guest who did not want to be on camera.

We knew we wanted the style to be motivated cinema verite, which also makes it more difficult because the stories need to arise in scene. There are no expert interviews, no overly emphasized statistics and no calls-to-action. Because the statistics are hyperbolic enough, we really had the opportunity to make a subtle, layered film.

CAN YOU TAKE ABOUT YOUR TEAM? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO FILM AND EDIT THE DOCUMENTARY? WAS SECURING FUNDING A PROBLEM?

There?s a reason this is not ?A film by Lisa Biagiotti? and that?s because it would be a different film if it weren?t for Director of Photography Duy Linh Tu and Editor Joe Lindquist. I call us the Triumverate and our trio goes by ?Royal Red Studios,? named for the most amazing (fried) shrimp we ate together in Mobile, Alabama.

For me, filmmaking is a collaborative experience. I had a vision for what I wanted with the film, but was insistent that they both bring their talents and expertise to make it bigger than I could imagine. I met Duy at Columbia?s J-school, where he runs the digital media program. After I graduated, we remained in contact and I kept telling him about this idea I had about a story on HIV in the Deep South. He actually told me to go on my first road trip, and 4,000 miles in, he joined the project because he believed in the story. The visual aesthetic is his genius. We shot it on DSLRs, which allowed for a real intimacy in the field.

I met Joe on Twitter, even though he wasn?t on Twitter at the time. While Duy and I were shooting in Louisiana last August, we decided we needed to hire an editor. I told him about Bombay Beach, an art house film about life around the Salton Sea in California. I tweeted that we were looking for an experimental, unconventional editor in the style of ?BombayBeach,? ?Tree of Life? and ?Y Tu Mama Tambien.? The director of Bombay Beach sent me a Facebook message that I should contact her editor: Joe Lindquist.

Duy and I were so immersed in deepsouth at the point Joe came in, so we welcomed a fresh perspective. Joe knew very little about HIV/AIDS, but he knew a lot about good storytelling.

ON YOUR SITE, YOU?VE TALKED ABOUT THE PROCESS: ?HOW DO WE VISUALLY DOCUMENT AN INVISIBLE STORY? HOW DO WE EFFECTIVELY TELL A STORY NO ONE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT?? DO YOU FEEL YOU WERE IN SUCCESSFUL IN ACCOMPLISHING THESE TASKS AT HAND? WHAT WAS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS IN VISUALLY SUCH A COMPLEX TOPIC?

I do. And that?s a direct result of the people we follow in ?deepsouth.? We were not exactly filming the most exciting scenes: Josh wandering around the Delta, Kathie walking down Hallways, Monica and Tammy packing up cars. Nothing actually happens in the film. But I think you forget it?s about HIV and you can relate to what it?s like to feel alone, or up against the system or that you have to do everything yourself. And those universal human experience translate across time and place.

Our goal was to show what the experience of living with HIV was like in the rural South. We wanted to document reality and chronicle experience because it was what seemed to be missing from the sea of statistics, data and reports. The human stories were always filtered through a statistic or data point, and we found it to be objectifying and reductive.

HOW HAVE THE LIVES CHANGED OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE FILM SINCE YOU WRAPPED PRODUCTION?

Josh is now at Jackson State University pursuing a degree in social work. Monica and Tammy are trying to keep their lights, but still providing bi-monthly support group meetings. Kathie is still traveling, and last month she presented at some Congressional briefings on HIV in the South. They will all be in DC for the ?deepsouth? premiere during the International AIDS Conference.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE VIEWERS TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE DOCUMENTARY?

We think we know the story of HIV/AIDS, but we really only know the history of HIV. Prof. Stephen Inrig of the University of Texas Southwestern describes the abnormal history of the epidemic, in that we?re in the middle (not the end) of it. He references the histories of the Cold War told during the actual war. He says that our current response is based on a past epidemic that has happened in another part of the country. I?m interested to understand how the National HIV/AIDS Strategy with a focus on 12 cities will translate to rural areas of this country.

I?ve also seen a lot of press about HIV in the South in the last few weeks, and I?m glad for the attention, I believe, however, that most of the coverage misses the entire picture. Stories are told through silos of race or poverty or data or science. It is the integration of all those silos where the complete story emerges. That?s a messy task.

My friend and colleague Susan Wolfson describes AIDS in 2012 with four P?s: paradox, progress, promise, paralysis. Simply put, we are 30+ years into this epidemic and we?re still in crisis mode. Are we able to end (to slow) the epidemic with our current toolkit?

We have our news templates, our new faces, the cycle of ethnic AIDS days, annual walks, so it?s very difficult to tell an HIV story that runs counter to the norm. But I do hope ?deepsouth? documents the experience of what it?s like to be affected by HIV.

I hope we are able to reframe the disease to match the reality that I?ve experienced across the South.
