The O Music Awards are back once again. And this time, they're taking the bus ... all day long.

Yes, on June 27, the digitally driven event will let someone else take the wheel as they play out aboard a tricked-out tour bus that will travel through the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of rock and roll. The trek — from Memphis to New Orleans — will take place over 24 hours, making the O Music Awards the world's first 24-hour awards-show live stream.

Of course, that's not the only first that'll take place during the show. In keeping with tradition, the O Music Awards will also see another attempt at a Guinness World Record as the Flaming Lips ride along aboard the bus as the de facto house band and aim to break Jay-Z's record for the most live concerts in 24 hours by playing gigs in eight different cities.

"I don't remember if I was asked or if I volunteered. ... But I've accepted the job of not driving but commandeering the Magical Mystery Merry Prankster bus," Lips frontman Wayne Coyne said. "I've accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing eight shows in 24 hours. And I've explained to the music freaks at MTV, VH1 and CMT that I am not a host. ... But I always liked the way Jerry Lewis would get all sweaty toward the end of his yearly telethon. To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at eight in the morning, well ... I'm open to new experiences."

You can watch Coyne go for greatness on June 27 when the O Music Awards stream live at OMusicAwards.com. That's also where you can vote for your favorites — including Nicki Minaj, One Direction, Taylor Swift and, uh, MC Hammer — in O Music Award categories like Fan Army FTW, Must-Follow Artist on Twitter, and Too Much Ass for TV, given to the best NSFW video.

The full list of nominees can be seen over on the O Music Awards official site. Additional performers and presenters for the June 27 show will be announced in the coming weeks.

Painting over a presidential penis: Vandalism or not?

Two pictures show an unidentified man defacing a controversial portrait of South African President Jacob Zuma at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Two men who vandalized a controversial painting of South African President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed were due to appear in court Wednesday.

Television footage Tuesday showed a white middle-aged man in a suit walking up to the portrait, called The Spear, at a Johannesburg gallery and painting a red cross on the president's face and private parts, Reuters reported.?A younger black man then? smeared black paint over the picture while the first man was being taken into custody by security guards.

"I'm doing this because the painting is disrespectful to President Zuma," one of the men told BBC News.

A BBC correspondent said he saw one of the vandals being head-butted as he was detained at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg.

The picture of Zuma is a facsimile of a famous poster of communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin. In the red, black and yellow painting, the president is shown striking Lenin's heroic stance, but with his penis hanging out of his trousers.

Racist?
Zuma's African National Congress party had already launched a legal bid to try to force the gallery to remove the picture, which it described as crude and racist.

Minutes before the vandals attacked, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe told Reuters people had a right to criticize the government, but there were limits.

Amid the controversy, supporters of South African President Jacob Zuma gather outside the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The artist, Brett Murray, is well-known in South Africa for his work criticizing the white-minority apartheid government that ended in 1994.

The painting was taken down from display after the attack, prompting the Zimbabwe Mail newspaper to file a report headlined ?Presidency penis goes into hiding.?

'Paucity of morals'
The Goodman Gallery said Murray?s exhibition, called Hail to the Thief II, ?continues his acerbic attacks on abuses of power, corruption and political dumbness.?

?Murray?s bronzes, etchings, paintings and silk-screens form part of a vitriolic and succinct censure of bad governance and are his attempts to humorously expose the paucity of morals and greed within the ruling elite,? the gallery said on its website, which was still showing an unvandalized image of the painting.

Zuma has been married six times and fathered 21 children.

Anton Harber, chairman of South Africa's Freedom of Expression Institute last week called the ANC's criticism of the picture "silly" and defended artists' right to pose difficult, uncomfortable questions with their work.

The arrested men, Barend la Grange, and Lowie Mabokela were due to appear in court Wednesday, The City Press newspaper reported, along with a third man arrested outside the gallery after allegedly spraying paint on a wall.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Treatment of childhood OSA reverses brain abnormalities

ScienceDaily (May 20, 2012) ? Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children normalizes disturbances in the neuronal network responsible for attention and executive function, according to a new study.

"OSA is known to be associated with deficits in attention, cognition, and executive function," said lead author Ann Halbower, MD, Associate Professor at the Children's Hospital Sleep Center and University of Colorado Denver. "Our study is the first to show that treatment of OSA in children can reverse neuronal brain injury, correlated with improvements in attention and verbal memory in these patients."

The results will be presented at the ATS 2012 International Conference in San Francisco.

In the study, children (ages 8-11) with moderate-severe OSA were compared to healthy controls. Brain imaging with magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging was performed at baseline in 15 OSA patients and seven controls, along with neuropsychological testing. OSA treatment consisted of adenotonsillectomy followed by monitored continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or nasal treatments. Brain imaging and neuropsychological testing was performed again in 11 OSA patients and the seven controls six months after treatment.

Compared with controls at baseline, children with OSA exhibited significantly decreased N-acetyl aspartate to choline ratios (NAA/Cho) in the left hippocampus and left frontal cortex, along with significant decreases in the executive functions of verbal memory, and attention. Following treatment, both left and right frontal cortex neuronal metabolites normalized, and hippocampal metabolites improved with a medium effect size (0.5).

More complete reversal of hippocampal abnormalities was seen in children with milder OSA when apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) improved (although this is very preliminary data). Verbal memory and attention improved with medium to large effect sizes. Improvements in attention and verbal memory were correlated with normalization of NAA/Cho in the right and left frontal cortex (p=0.5).

"We have demonstrated for the first time that treatment of OSA in children normalizes brain metabolites in portions of the neuronal network responsible for attention and executive function," concluded Dr. Halbower. "We speculate that if OSA is treated earlier, there may be a more brisk improvement in the hippocampus, a relay station for executive function, learning, and memory."

"Our results point to the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of OSA in children, as it could potentially have profound effects on their development."
