Depending on the pet of your choice, you have many reasons to get that pet, or not to get it. When discussing the feasibility of fish at pets, they can be great for many reasons that are reasons not to get other pets. Fishes don't make any sound. They don't yap at the gate for hours on end, or chirp and squawk, or make that weird wailing noise when other cats come into their yard in the middle of the night. You don't need to clean up after a fish - they won't answer the call of nature anywhere and everywhere they please. All you need to do to clean up after a fish is to clean their bowls or fish tanks every month or so, and you don't need to give them all sorts of housebreaking training to make them leave their waste in a litter box. Fish don't shed - and if they do, they live with it, not you. Fish will not cover the leg of your black pants with hair, or shed on your couch and clog the vacuum cleaner. They don't bring up hairballs either. They don't jump up and leave paw marks on your new shirt, and they won't shred the couch or the curtains. Fish aren't food thieves who raid your dinner table, and won't "join" you at the dinner table either. They don't have special needs like bathing or brushing, as they have all the water they need in the tank. You don't need to play with them or take them for walks, and as long as you feed them regularly, you can go about your daily business for several days straight. Fish don't eat your plants, dig holes in the middle of the lawn, or lift their leg on the car tyres. Fish are not scared of fireworks or thunder. On New Year's Day or the Fourth of July, you don't have to bother sedating your fishes, or worry that they aren't in one piece anymore after returning home from a night of holiday revelry. You can talk to fish - and they don't talk back. They won't expect you to be at their beck and call 24/7. They are fun to watch, and pretty, and easy to care for. And you don't need to open any cans or clean any bowls of food - all you need to do is sprinkle a few flakes of fish food twice a day to keep your fish from going hungry. Unfortunately, fish aren't too receptive - if they are receptive at all - to your presence. They don't snuggle up against you, or keep your feet warm in winter. You can't play with them - tapping the glass does not count - and you can't give them a hug. Fishes won't provide any source of comfort or affection when you need it the most, and don't know the meaning of unconditional love. Most aquarium owners can live with this or have other pets to fill the roles fishes can't play, so if you feel the same way, then fishes are just the pets for your needs.
