With the Boomers' coaching job up for grabs, Rob Beveridge will go into overdrive with the Perth Wildcats over the coming months to prove he has what it takes to lead Australia's men's basketball side.
The Boomers are on the lookout for a new coach after Brett Brown quit his post earlier this week, citing family reasons.
Beveridge, who unsuccessfully applied for the top job four years ago, confirmed he would again throw his hat into the ring.
And the renowned developer of young talent hopes his success with the Wildcats will boost his chances.
Beveridge was in his first season with the Wildcats when he led them to the championship in 2010, while Perth was only narrowly pipped to the title last season by New Zealand in an epic three-game grand final series.
The Wildcats are undefeated after three games this season, but will have their work cut out for them in Sunday's clash with fellow high-flyers Wollongong at WIN Entertainment Centre.
Others in line for the Boomers job include Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis, who has won the past two NBL titles, Adelaide 36ers coach Marty Clarke and former Boomers coach Brian Goorjian.
Beveridge has a solid history when it comes to working with Australia's brightest basketball talent.
The 42-year-old coached a then-teenage Patrick Mills while head of the Nike All-Asia Camp, and he also helped mentor star centre Andrew Bogut in Australia's under-19 world championship triumph in 2003.
Beveridge isn't sure whether he would retain his post at the Wildcats if appointed coach of the Boomers, which has been a part-time role in the past but could become full-time.
Basketball Australia are expected to take their time in appointing a new coach.
In the meantime, Beveridge will work overtime to help the Wildcats reach an even higher level both on and off the court.
'It actually motivates me to do my job even better,' Beveridge said of the job opening at the Boomers.
'I want our program to be the best program, and then if Basketball Australia think that's good enough, maybe I'll get the nod.
'But it's out of my control.'
Beveridge is expecting a stern challenge against the Gordie McLeod-coached Wollongong, which boasts classy imports Lance Hurdle and Adris DeLeon.
'I've always said he's a wise old man,' Beveridge said of McLeod.
'He's always got something up his sleeve.
'He'll do something different, but we don't know what it is.
'He just runs an incredibly disciplined program. And now he's got a couple of extra studs in there with Hurdle and DeLeon, so they're a very good team.'
