Chinese investors 'cheesed off': Johnson

CHINESE investors are being spooked by criticism within the federal opposition of foreign investment guidelines, a business broker says.

Michael Johnson, a former federal Liberal party whip who now operates Asia-Pacific business consultancy the Kokoda Capital Group, said criticism of the approval of the sale of Queensland cotton farm Cubbie Station to a Japanese-Chinese consortium was not going down well.

"We represent a very large Chinese investor that wants to make an acquisition of gold assets in this country," Mr Johnson told Sky News today.

"And the message coming out of that company and out of potential target companies in Australia, from the executives of those companies, is they don't like what they are hearing from the opposition.

"This baseline, very populist, politics that is coming out of the mouths of significant members of the coalition and particularly the National party.

"It is not sending a good message to potential Chinese investors and quite frankly they are absolutely cheesed off."

Nationals senators Barnaby Joyce and John Williams have called for a review of the Cubbie Station decision, but shadow treasurer Joe Hockey has backed the Foreign Investment Review Board.
