Former AFL Richmond captain Wayne Campbell and his wife have spoken of being victims of a home invasion that sparked two high-speed pursuits in her stolen car that culminated with a police vehicle deliberately ramming it.

A Melbourne court heard today that police tracked Sarah Campell's Toyota Rav 4 on an iPhone stolen from a doctor's home in January this year.

Melbourne Magistrates Court was told that the man accused of committing an aggravated burglary at the couple's home was arrested after a violent and bloody battle with police, in which one officer's gun failed to discharge as he tried to shoot him.

The Campbells were expected to be witnesses today at a contested committal hearing for Robert Alexander.

But prosecutor Damien Hannan said that while the defence had requested and been granted permission to cross examine them, they were ultimately not required to attend court.

The Campbells told police in their statements, that was tendered in court, that they were asleep with their two children between 10pm on January 9 this year, and 6am the next day.

Ms Campbell said she woke later that morning to find her handbag that contained her car keys, wallet and $100 cash had been stolen from inside the front door and that her vehicle had also been stolen.

The 297-game Tiger legend said when he woke, he saw that his wallet, that had been left on the ledge inside the front door, had been stolen along with $200 cash and various keys.

It is alleged that five days after the incident Alexander, 35, committed an aggravated burglary at a doctor's home in Clifton Hill where he stole an iPhone.

The doctor, Isabelle Teutscher-Klauser and her husband Paul Klauser gave evidence in court of disturbing a man in their home near dawn.

Alexander was accused of later evading two police pursuits that were called off as he avoided capture at high speeds in Balywn and Blackburn.

Leading Senior Constable Daniel Sonderhof said in evidence that after Ms Campbell's car was rammed by a police vehicle in Warrandyte, he tried to arrest Alexander by striking him with his revolver, his baton, deploying capsicum spray and punching him.

He said after Alexander picked up a tree branch they struggled on the ground where he pulled out his revolver and tried to shoot Alexander but the trigger did not operate before he was overpowered by other police.

Alexander today pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing Ms Campbell's car on the basis that he had aquired it after its theft.

He was committed for trial and pleaded not guilty to numerous other charges that included reckless conduct endangering life.

He was discharged on an offence of committing an aggravated burglary at the doctor's house while armed with an imitation firearm.

His barrister Kevin Doyle noted that Alexander was presently held in a high care unit at Port Phillip Prison.

He will appear again in September in the County Court.
