YMCA Piranhas host swim meet Saturday ? Local Sports ? Valdosta ...

VALDOSTA ? Swimmers from different parts of South Georgia will compete in the annual Valdosta YMCA Piranha Invitational on Saturday at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Family YMCA.

Around 100 swimmers from 6?18 years old will compete in six different age groups.

The meet begins at 9 a.m. and will last until around 1 p.m. The event is open to the public, and free to attend.

?It?s a great way (for people) to see what competitive swimming is about,? said Angie Bruhl, the head coach of the Piranhas, the Valdosta YMCA?s swim team. ?Over the past years, we?ve tried to continue to get it to grow and get more kids interested in it.?

The Piranhas will try to win their home meet for the second year in a row. Last year, the Piranha girls swimmers earned 61 points more than second-place Tifton, while the boys won by 38 points.

?You always want to win. But really the ultimate goal is you want your swimmers to do their best, and attain personal bests every single meet,? Piranhas assistant coach Jeff Corley said.

Saturday?s meet is one of several meets the Piranhas will swim in during the summer.

?It?s a great summer league program we?re part of,? Bruhl said. ?It?s all of South Georgia. Everybody has a meet; (we compete) almost every weekend. It?s a good way to get kids interested in swimming.?

Last Saturday, the Piranhas finished fifth in a nine-team meet in Tifton, earning 298 total points.

?They?re looking good,? Bruhl said. ?It?s the beginning of the summer, so we?re still getting a lot of new swimmers in. But they?re all swimming well.?

Brandon Fineout, Jordan Ray and Cannon George all placed second in the individual high point standings for their respective age groups.

In the boys? 8-under division, Cole Houston finished third in the 25-meter backstroke. For the 9-10 boys, Fineout placed first in the 50-meter freestyle and had two second place finishes. Ruthie Bennett placed first in the 25-meter breaststroke for the 9-10 girls. In the 13-14 girls competition, Ray won the 50-meter freestyle and also had a second and third place finish.

George took home two seconds and a third place finish for the boys. Madison Marshall won the 50-meter breaststroke for the 15-18 girls, and also had a second place finish. Kaitlin Sweet brought home three second place finishes.

The Piranhas swim year around, and always welcome new members. Anyone interested in joining the Piranhas swim team can call the Valdosta YMCA at (229) 244-4646.
