GOP candidate drops primary challenge to Doherty in 1st District

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Republican Brendan Doherty won't face a primary in his campaign for the 1st Congressional District seat held by Democrat David Cicilline.

Michael Donahue, who filed last month to challenge Doherty in a primary for the seat, announced Monday that he will not run.

Donahue had also filed to run for state representative in District 68, which covers Bristol and Warren.

In an interview Monday on WHJJ-920 AM's "Helen Glover Show," he told guest host Mike Napolitano that he was dropping out of the 1st District race to focus on the Assembly campaign and said he was endorsing Doherty for Congress.
