Olympic Gold in the job search stakes - Birds on the Blog

As we round off the Olympics and await the Paralympics let?s take a few minutes to think about what makes an outstanding athlete and how it would make you a successful and compelling candidate when you are job searching.

There are six key elements to success which can be transferred across all sporting disciplines.

Talent

Yes, you need to have some natural ability or be gifted to excel. You need to understand where your strengths lie and how you can use this talent to achieve. Recognising that you have skills and can use them is essential. Identify your own skills and strengths to know what you can (and can?t) do and you will be able to offer something special to your next employer.

Commitment

You need to be disciplined and committed to training. Being the best in your field and reaching perfection is what you are aspiring to. Give yourself permission to spend sufficient time on your job search. Dedication to achieving your gold is what you are looking for and regular time and energy are needed if you are to be successful.

Target

You need to know what you are aiming for. In athletics field events there are many races to be won; which would you choose to excel in? You need to be specific and tailor your talent and commitment to just one goal to ensure that you can achieve that success. Research your options well and understand what motivates you best. Being focused means you increase the odds of reaching gold!

?Focus, discipline, hard work, goal setting and, of course, the thrill of finally achieving your goals. These are all lessons in life.? ?Kristi Yamaguchi, former Olympic figure skating champion

Coach

Every great sports person knows that their coach is there to support them. Through thick and thin, good and bad the coach gives positive encouragement, realistic evaluations and valuable feedback. ?All Olympians have a coach alongside them so why shouldn?t you?

Plan

It doesn?t just happen. Olympics are every four years; but there are annual competitions and local events to attend. A winning athlete understands the value of scheduling, planning and focusing so that they remain fresh and confident at each event. A strong career plan is essential in how you approach the job market.

Win

There is only one outcome for these Olympians; yes, they want to be part of the game and achieve a result for their country but the only accolade they really want is a GOLD. ?Emotionally and physically; the combination of talent, commitment and target all come together for the one event and they want to come first. Using all your resources you can come out on top.

Although they only give gold medals in the field of sports, I encourage everyone to look into themselves and find their own personal dream, whatever that may be?business, medicine, whatever. The same principles apply.

Do you give 100% to your job search?
